Offer Update: $100 Target Gift Cards Received

I got my first round of $100 in free Target gift cards from Citibank today, only 12 days after ordering them online from the ThankYou website. Not bad! Much faster than the 4-6 weeks mentioned.

I’ve been reading your site for a couple of hours (just found it) and I’ve got a couple of questions about the…you guessed it, balance transfer/0% – 12 months/earn interest elsewhere exercise.

    1) Can already existing Citi customers get in on, for example, the two cards you profile in this post? As much as people are doing these 0% transfer deals (and holding onto the card after the 0% expires) it seems like you’d eventually be holding multiple cards from the same company. Companies will keep giving you deals like this $100 rebate even if you’re alread a customer?

    2) Sounds like the key to the arbitrage fun is one being able to state what balance transfer they want to make and Citi (for example) cutting one a check for that amount (within their limit, of course). Why isn’t this considered a cash advance (which is excluded from the 0% deal)?

Hope you’re not too tired of answering these questions!

Not at all, those are good and valid questions.

    1) Yes, existing Citi cardholders can definitely get in on this! I’ve probably had 10 Citi cards overall. But you can only have 3 at a time. If have less than 3, then you are good to go!

If you already have 3, Citi may ask you to close one of your other accounts in order to open up a new one. Chances are if you have 3 you are not using them all anyways as one is bound have a better rewards program than the other. So close the least used one.

    2) Citi does not consider writing you a check for the balance transfer a cash advance. I don’t know why exactly, but it is clearly labelled as a balance transfer. Please check out this link for some screenshots showing this. I’ve done it multiple times, with no fees.

Are there any expiry dates on the gift cards ?

  5. Jonathan Says:

Not on my Target ones, no. I think Amazon.com gift certificates do expire after 3 years. I guess it all depends on the store.

  6. Roger Says:

I did not receive the $100 Target gift card first. After 4 weeks, I called for resending me a new one, and I got it within 7 days
