GroceryMiles
If you shop at Safeway or one of their partner stores Dominick’s, Vons, Pavilions, or Genuardis, you can get 125 United Airlines Mileage Plus miles per $250 spent. I’ve probably earned thousands of miles over the last few years. You simply have to go to GroceryMiles.com and register your club card. Today, I got one of those “Catalina” coupons that offered an additional 1,000 mile bonus if you sign up by 6/30. Although there seems to be no mention on the website, here is a scan of the coupon:

UPromise
Mentioned previously, there are a bunch of different ways to accumulate money at Upromise. The main one is as a cashback site like eBates. But there are two additional ways to earn some money through UPromise without changing your buying patterns. For one, if you link up your grocery club card (Safeway, Albertsons, and Publix are examples) you can get free cashback when buying certain brands.

Next, if you link up your credit card, if you shop at a qualified brick-and-mortar store you can get a rebate (1% at Bed Bath and Beyond, 3% at Eddie Bauer, etc.). You can also link your credit card to a dining program that automatically gives you a rebates when you dine out at participating restaurants. I never look at the list of restaurants, but occasionally I’ll get a couple bucks by chance. Right now if you sign up with UPromise and make a purchase through their cashback portal you can get a $10 bonus. (Also an $10 bonus for cashback portal eBates.)

Now, none of these programs will make you rich. But if you are bored just sign up, link up the appropriate cards, and forget about it. Just continue to spend as usual since they will just credit you automatically. With UPromise, supposedly the money is for college or student loans, but you can also request a check to be sent to you.

  1. I’ve been doing the Safeway/United miles for years. The 125 miles adds up over time.

  2. If you are looking for a good way to SPEND those miles, Be sure to check out Points.com. It’s Free and supports plenty of programs to actually cash those miles in for Gift Cards and Such..

I cash in about 1000 AA Miles every so often for free movie tickets for the wife and I.

    Carlo.

  3. Retirement Advice says

uPromise is great…but there are also other cards with college savings tie-ins. Fidelity has a card where the rewards are twice what you find with uPromise.

  4. Retirement Advice:
What is the card you mention that Fidelity has? I would love additional information.
    Thanks, Stacey

  5. I wasn’t talking about the Citi Upromise card, all of the tie-ins mentioned above work with any credit card. Specific cashback at retailers, Dining.

Fidelity has a credit card that offers 1.5% back into a Fidelity-sponsored 529 account. More info here. However, they also have one that offers 1.5% back into a regular Fidelity brokerage account, which has a lot less restrictions, so I would rather just have the flexibility of cash. More info here

  6. Fidelity has a 529 plan credit card and there is a general retirement/brokerage account credit card. You must have an account with Fidelity but for every 5,000 dollars you spend you get $75 dollars deposited into that account. I have used the brokerage account one and love it. When I have kids I will use the 529 card. I think it’s a nice forced way to save.

  7. I used to live in a city where Safeway was everywhere, so I signed up for their club card. Later when I found out I could get UA miles by just registering the card, I found the card and punched the number in. I did not expect more since I no longer live in an area with a Safeway or other grocery stores associated with the program, but since then, every few months I’ll get 125 miles from Safeway even though I have not been to one in 5 years!!

  8. In regards to Fidelity card, the newly issued cards are for 1.5%. For us oldtimers who had the original card back when it was issued through MBNA, one still gets 2%.

  9. Jonathan,

I cant find a way to link my regular credit card to UPromise – how can i do that?

    Thanks..

    Bini

  10. Diana, somebody else is probably using your Safeway card number. Post it here and maybe more people will start using it…

  11. In the last year, a restaurant my family frequents (because kids eat free on Tuesdays) joined the Dining by Rewards/Upromise Dining Network which has accelerated my cash back. I’ve now received over $600 in 5 years from Upromise with little change in shopping behavior.

@Bini–> To add a credit card to your Upromise account, login and then go to “My Account”. In the blue column on the left you’ll select “Add Credit / Debit Card” under Profile.

  12. Above link for grocerymiles.com not working?
