Coinstar Promo: Get $10 More With $40 In Coins
Coin-changing machine operator CoinStar is running a promotion where if you change $40 in coins into a gift card, you can receive an additional $10 gift card by mail. They offer to exchange coins into gift cards with no fee for several stores, the most popular probably being Amazon.com followed by CVS, Starbucks, Lowe’s, and iTunes.
Perhaps empty out that coin jar and cross someone off your gift list and well? Below is selected fine print from the official rules:
Obtain an official claim form when you convert in a single transaction at least 40 U.S. dollars (in coins only) into a gift card or eCertificate at participating Coinstar Centers. The claim form will be displayed at the end of qualified Coinstar® receipts.
General terms and conditions: the $10 holiday bonus offer ends 12/6/09. Offer valid in the U.S. only and excludes Puerto Rico. Offer good on qualified coin transactions made between 11/9/09 and 12/6/09. Transactions occurring before or after these dates are not eligible for this offer. Limit 1 per name, address, or household.

while I don’t have $40 in coin right now, it seems like you could buy a few rolls of quarters from the bank, head to the machine and cash them in for a free $10. Of course that money would be tied up in a gift card, rather than cash, but if you’re going to use it at said stores anyway, then it sounds ok.

All I have to say is good luck with this. Coin star had something similar about a year ago. Everytime I went to a coinstar machine the gift card service was unavailable (however it would still turn my coins into cash for their 9% fee). I don’t know if the coinstars in my area were just set up improperly, or if their service was just out, but I went to 4 machines over the span of a week and wasn’t able to get one to pay out in gift cards. I eventually just rolled my coins by hand and took them to the bank. Maybe their machines have gotten better since then, but it just wasn’t worth running all over town to find one that actually was able to issue gift cards.

You can get dollar coins back from most vending machines if you don’t have time to get to the bank. I have 4 machines at work here so i bet i could put in 4 tens and get my $40 in coins, plus it is like winning a slot machine in vegas!

Coinstar.. capitalizing on the awful and inefficient system of coins.

Do you pay a transaction fee of 9% on transaction?
If yes, its not worth the hassle. You’d only make $6 less the postage for rebate. And the long wait for the rebate.

@ mbirchmeier – your bank should have a coin counter that counts them for free – I would never pay the 9% transaction fee at coinstar and I haven’t rolled coins since 6th grade. I think it was an early version of a gifted program.

@mbirchmeier: Not all Coinstar machines issue gift cards/codes. However, if you were using one that was supposed to do so, you can contact Coinstar customer service and get a refund of the service fee. I’ve had to do this twice, and I’ve received a check in the mail for the service fee amount within a week or two. Their customer service contact point is info@coinstar.com or call 800-928-CASH.

I use coinstar on a regular basis. Some gift cards can be refilled right at the machine. I save all my change and refill my Starbucks card.

Just tried this out, it was pretty easy. Although I did have to count the coins to make sure I had enough.
