Ooma Core VoIp w/ No Monthly Fees $199

Amazon has dropped the price on the Ooma Core (Hub+Scout) VoIP phone system to $199 from $249. This is the older Ooma system, which still has unlimited long distance but also does not have any monthly regulatory fees/taxes charged each month, for a completely fee-free experience. They don’t make these anymore, and are increasingly hard to find. (The new Ooma Telo has higher fees of about $3/month – check them here with your zip code.)

Frys.com also has the Ooma Hub refurbished for only $129. There are differing reports online as to whether these are subject to the monthly fees, so I’d only buy it if you have a Fry’s nearby to return.

I’m still happy with mine after 9 months and counting – read about my Ooma experiences here.

Now that google voice is open to the masses you shouldn’t have to spend more than $50 for a voip box and then set it up with a free in-bound voip company, then you can get all your calls for free, if you don’t mind getting on your itouch or computer to make those calls. Check out lifehacker.com for voip company suggestions. I’ve been doing it for over a year now and have been very pleased.

Jon, if you don’t mind me asking, how much do you pay for your internet?

If you have dsl, you probably have phone landline and you also pay for DSL service.

So far, i couldn’t find a cable provider that is cheaper than dsl + phone landline.

In my place, there is only At&t and Time Warner. That it.

@Mike – It varies depending on if I’ve haggled it down for that 6 months, and is combined with cable tv (gasp! yes I pay for ESPN…) I do know what you mean when you say DSL is often cheaper. $30 to $50

However, have you looked into naked DSL? AT&T seems to offer it, even if they don’t promote it. Also, consider downgrading to the leanest phone service and see if that makes things even cheaper. Good luck!

  7. Mike Says:

yes i have looked at Naked DSL, but AT&T wants to charge 25 dollars for the basic DSL(slowest speed) if you have a landline. However, it is 35 dollars for the slowest speed for naked DSL. So the difference is 10 dollars more for internet if you don’t have landline.
