Southwest Airlines Credit Card Offer

Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card from Chase. The Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card is currently offering 25,000 Rapid Rewards points after your first purchase worth a Free Flight. This is based on the fact that a roundtrip $416 Wanna Get Away fares would cost 24,960 points. In reality, the value of the bonus is $416 towards Southwest airfare, and you can use the points as needed for multiple flights.

The card features 2 points per dollar spent on Southwest airlines purchases, 2 points per dollar spent on Southwest hotel and car rental partner purchases, and 1 point per dollar on everything else. Each point is worth 1.67 cents towards Southwest Wanna Get Away fares. The annual fee is $69, and each anniversary you get 3,000 points that are worth another $50 towards Wanna Get Away fares.

In addition to Southwest flights, you can redeem the points on hotel stays, car rentals, international flights, and gift cards. For gift cards in general, 5,000 points = $50 value. Specifically, you can redeem 25,000 points for $250 in gift certificates at Amazon.com, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Walmart. Useful alternative if you don’t live in a city served by Southwest.

  1. Thanks for the heads up!

I just applied, was approved, and am ready to get my free tickets!

I already have the British Airways Card from Chase. I do like the way they update charges and place them for view immediately in pending as they are incurred. Also like the way they have your credit card details right along there with your checking account — all from one log in. I am impressed with their efficiency. My husband has the AARP card from Chase. Would another card (specifically this Southwest deal) look bad on the account. I am very tempted.

  3. I applied for this card on July 24th. I didn’t get immediate approval on-line, instead it said they would let me know in 7-10 days. However, when I called on August 4th, all they could tell me is that my “application processing has not been returned yet.” Does anyone have any suggestions for who to contact at Chase to try to move this along? I don’t want to miss out on this offer.

  4. I applied for this several times but always denied. Says ‘too many inquiries’.
I have received the other chase $500 and citi $500 in the past two months, so
    maybe that’s why.

  5. Do you need to have a Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards account to get the bonus points, or are the bonus points on the credit card separate from Rapid Rewards?

  6. If you have good credit and get denied due to “too many cards”, it may simply because you have too many Chase cards or too large a credit limit with Chase. Do not cancel any cards right away or give up.

Instead, call the Chase credit reconsideration line at 1-888-245-0625. Ask them politely for the exact reason why you were denied, and offer to cancel and/or lower your credit lines in order to get the new card you want. You should be offered some way to get approved. I have heard many success stories, even specifically for this Southwest card. They want your business.

  7. @Matthew – I think you need a Rapid Rewards account to get the points, but I’m sure they will open one up for you if you don’t have one. Or you can open one up yourself and give them the number later. Here’s a link for 250 free points for a new account:

    (It’s not much, but something)

  8. Thank you. I called the reconsideration line minutes after not getting instantly approved. CS said reason I did not get instantly approved is due to high existing credit across 3 other Chase cards. She would take 10K from one of my Freedom cards and give it to the new Chase Southwest card. Now approved. Thank you again.

  9. That was easy.

  10. I haven’t applied for any cards in a while. I was approved online instantly! I can’t wait to start travelling.

  11. you have to be approved by monday morning or just apply by then?

  12. @Max – Your application must be submitted while the application page still offers you the “2 free flights”/50k points. I wouldn’t wait until the last minute because they may pull it a bit early or who knows what. Approval can either be instant or they may manually review it, but you’ll still be under the terms & conditions agreed upon on the application.

  13. Last month, I wanted the $100 signup bonus from the chase freedom card. I applied and was denied. I called the reconsideration line, and it was because i had signed up for and received a chase card within the previous 6 months (continental one pass). They allowed me to close my old chase amazon card with a 3500 limit, and then they approved my chase freedom card. Then this southwest deal showed up so i applied for this too, and was denied. Again I called the reconsideration line, and offered to close my old chase sapphire card with a 6500 limit if i could get the southwest card. They approved me and the southwest card now shows up in my online account. I’m just waiting for the card to come :). I’ve gotten so many of these… i have 13 open cards right now and 18 closed ones, according to my recent free annual credit report.

  14. wow, that was a piece of cake. I have to find more reasons to fly.

  15. How long does it take to get the 50,000 bonus points? I’ve already gotten my first statement but haven’t gotten the 50,000 bonus points.

And when do they give out the 6,000 anniversary points? Is it at the end of each membership year or at the beginning?

  16. @Mike – The semi-hidden print on the application page says “You will qualify for and receive your bonus points after your first purchase. First purchase does not include using your account for balance transfers or cash advances, or using any checks that access your account. After qualifying, please allow 6 to 8 weeks for bonus points to post to your Rapid Rewards account.”

The 6,000 points are on your anniversary, so that is their code-speak for “you gotta have the card one year first”.

  17. So I called the credit reconsideration line on Sunday and they told me my Application (done on July 23rd) was on hold due to fraud concerns. So I had to call the fraud operations line today (Monday Aug 8th) and finally got my application approved! Hopefully they don’t come back and say it got approved too late or something like that.

  18. Margaret says:

Off topic somewhat but has anyone tried redeeming American Airlines miles through Points.com. I am having a bad experience registering with their website and find it extremely confusing. Just wondered if anyone else out there had tried this and, if so, what is your opinion of this outfit.

  19. I received my points today after 4 weeks of receiving my card. Definitely a great recommendation!

  20. Is it better to apply for these $500 all at the same time (3 different rewards cards). Or space them out over a few months time. My question is which will hurt the credit score less? Second question, if its a better choice to space them out, then optimally how much time should elapse between each new application? Thanks!

  21. I see you did not post my comment on how this deal has not ended. You have lost all credibility with me & I will make sure others find ou t what a shady character you really are

  22. @Margaret – Don’t use Points.com. They are not an official redemption site, just a secondary marketplace. I would stick to redeeming at AA.com or over the phone directly with American.

@mks – Many people say that if you apply for all 3 cards at the exact same time on the exact same day, then there may be (1) fewer total credit inquiries on your credit history since they may lump them together and (2) one issuer won’t be able to see the other inquiries since they happened the same day. I would either go that route, or space them just so that you don’t have more than 3-5 in any given rolling 6-month period.

@Max – Where has this deal not ended? I can show you the e-mail where they said it would end if you like. There is indeed a new offer, but it is only for one free flight, not two free flights as it was before. Please send me a link if you have one for two free flights.

  23. They are still offering a scaled-down version of the card via link at bottom of Southwest’s Rapid Reward’s site: http://www.southwest.com/rapidrewards/overview. Seems to offer half the bonus with a $69 annual fee instead of $99.

  24. Yep, you get “one free flight”, or 25k points for $69 annual fee. But it appears the 50k offer is over.

  25. Thanks for your input Jonathon it is much appreciated. When I go to American AAdvantage and opt for redeeming points for gift cards it automatically takes me to Points.com. and there does not appear to be any other route to redeem for gift cards. Please tell me if I am missing something. Your advice would be appreciated.

  26. How do you redeem the southwest miles for gift card points?

  27. I was finally approved for this card, although they lowered the credit limits on two of my other Chase credit cards.

  28. i am still confused on how i will get the points. By signing up do i now have a southwest acct? i want to use it for gift cards so how do i do that?
