In my own phone, I use Mint Mobile to keep my cell phone costs low. They use the T-Mobile network, which means if you have a compatible phone switching just involves swapping in a new SIM card. It works just fine in my iPhone X. I just renewed for another full year of service for $240 at the 8 GB tier ($20 per month).

They just started a limited-time 40% off promo on their highest data tier with Unlimited Talk, Text, 12 GB of LTE Data per month. Instead of $25 per month if you buy a full year, it’s only $15 a month for 3 months ($45 total).

As with most of their promos, it’s about getting you to try them out so you can feel comfortable buying an entire year at a time. That’s their “gimmick”, where you buy in bulk and save.

They also offer a 7-Day Money Back Guarantee (starts upon SIM activation) so you can test them out before making any commitment at all. Here is my Mint Mobile SIM Activation and Number Port Transfer Review. Be sure to use their phone compatibility checker first to see if you can bring your current phone over and just pop in the Mint Mobile SIM card.

  1. Does this Mint offer have to be done online? Can I go to a store and have the switch the SIM card?
    Thanks

    • Yes, it must be done online, and they will mail the SIM card to you.

      • Thanks Jonathan for the quick response. I am currently on a one year free offer with Sprint. So if I order my SIM card today I can wait until the end of August to put the SIM in my phone and roll to this MInt Offer plan?
        Not sure when it expires?

        • The terms say “This offer for Buy 3 Months, Get 3 Months Free is only valid from 07/29/2019 through 11:59 pm on 09/09/2019.” but also “Mint Mobile reserves the right to modify or discontinue this offer at any time without notice.”

It also says “Must be activated within 45 days of purchase.” so it should be fine in your case.

      • Thanks Jonathan. Do you know when it expires? I am wondering if I order the SIM card now and hold off for a month if that will work? I am currently on Sprint’s free year plan soon to end in 30 days.

  2. May be worth checking out Total Wireless (Verizon MVNO) which has a family plan going for $60 ($57 with autofill). 30GB of data per month, but no hotspot. Bring your own phone option.

  3. I got me and wife down to about $75 a month with boost mobile but this might seem better.

  4. Is that 8GB per month, or does that 8GB have to last you the full 6 months?

  5. We had Mint from December-May. Worked well enough domestically, but was absolutely atrocious abroad (in a few different countries on a few different continents, where we had great T-mobile coverage before). In spite of the claims they may make about international roaming and coverage, do not believe them. Just do a quick internet search for “mint mobile international won’t work” and you’ll find forum after forum with unresolved problems.

  6. Do you get 8GB per month, or does that 8GB have to last you the whole 6 months?

A great deal for unlimited talk and text for essentially free (just ~ $1.50 for taxes) is Comcast Xfinity Mobile. They use the Verizon network. If you need data, it’s $12 per GB or $45 per month unlimited (I think). You get access to all the Xfinity hot spots, so you get free wi-fi when you are out and about in their service area. And of course wi-fi when you are at home, work, etc., so I rarely ever use any data. Even if you don’t have Comcast/Xfinity, if you have a friend or family member who does, ask if you can join onto their account. I switched from Verizon and have been satisfied with the service and loving the huge $ savings each month!

To keep the 3 month per-month pricing after the promo, it sounds like you need to pay for 12 months after the trial expires? I think they’re a little too clever with their pricing.

What is it month to month, without the trial? I can’t tell. Do you always pay for either 3 or 12 months at a time?

    From the FAQ:

“I purchased a 3-month plan at an introductory price. What will the cost of my plan be when I renew?
We’ve given new customers our best value pricing – our 12 month price – on our 3 month plans. After you’ve tried our service and know what data plan is right for you, then you can choose your plan length based on how clever you want to get.

Mint Tip: You can lock in our introductory 3-month pricing by renewing for 12 months.”

  9. I signed up online. I’m in my 8th day of trying to get my phone number from Walmart Family Plan to Mint Mobile. Ridiculous customer support on Mint Mobile – impossible for them to get anything done – nor do they return phone calls as they say they would. Nightmare here

    • Strange! Porting my number in (from Republic Wireless) was the quickest I’ve ever experienced… literally took about 3 minutes.

Are you sure you have the right ‘account number’ and pin/password that Walmart Family Plan has for you? That can be a big hang up… the relinquishing company won’t release the line if the new company doesn’t have the right info. You’ve probably got it fixed by now, but if not – worth verifying those two pieces of info with WFM.

  10. Where did you get your iPhone X?

  11. What happens when you’re not able to consume the 8GB on a single month? Do they have a top-up feature where any unused data in the previous month is added to the existing 8GB of next?

  12. I was targeted by MINT prior to my six month (buy 3 and get 3 free) promo ending. I ended up paying $148
inclusive taxes for 12 months. My year starts on my initial promo on the first 3 months so I added back $30 to my $148 that I paid giving me a total of $178 for 12 month of service (8GB) which ends up alittle under
    $15/mo. for a year. I was able to negotiate a $10 credit.
I don’t like how they are promoting a year offer but your full year starts on the 4th month of your initial promo that you already paid for. Since the rate is hard to beat I decided to lock in for a year.

    • Exactly my thoughts! They’re misadvertising. Can’t include 3 “free” month I already paid for in the calculation. They really asking $135 for 9 months which is $15/month.

How did you negotiate a $10 credit?

  13. I signed up for buy 3 get 3 plan in September. The free 3 months are starting late December and going through late March.

Today I received an offer from Mint to add another 9 months for $135, making the monthly cost of $11.25.

I disagree with how they calculate – in my mind I paid $60 for 6 months and the offer is for $135 for another 9 months so it comes to $13/month for 15 months. The price is pretty good though so I will likely go ahead and jump on it.
