The benefit of “old-school” desktop tax software is that it doesn’t require your Social Security Number and financial details to be stored in the “cloud”, a fancy word for a third-party server where it can be copied or hacked. Amazon and Newegg.com often have limited-time sales (often just 24 hours) on these desktop versions, but you have to catch them in time. Apologies if you missed it!

  • H&R Block Desktop Deluxe + State 2019 is currently $19.99 at Amazon. This is a good price as the all-time low price all last year was $18. Other versions are not on sale this time. Thanks to reader Bill P for the tip.
  • TurboTax Desktop Deluxe + State 2019 is $39.88 at Amazon for the physical disc/PC download/Mac download versions. This is not a special price, although it is rarely discounted (and will go higher as the deadline nears). There may be another deal later on that shaves off another $10 or so.

Keep in mind that for both H&R Block and TurboTax desktop Fed+State products, Federal e-Files are included but State e-File is extra (about $20 each). You can print the (usually shorter) state return for free and snail mail it in if you don’t have a free State e-File option.

  1. It’s $20 on Newegg with coupon code.

  2. Costco usually sells Turbo Tax at the begining of the year with a discount. Right now an e-delivery is $30 for the deluxe version

  3. At 11:26pm it’s $32.97 for Deluxe + State and $51.97 for Premium

  4. Sale is gone in 2018 the 2017 went on one day sale on January 2nd. Maybe again. I’ve used for 30 years. Be aware that a second state -for those who work in another state – is $39.99 plus tax.

Have you ever used credit karma tax? I’ve used it the last three years and have had no issues, but I don’t have a business, but I think it supports that? Maybe you should consider writing a review on it!

  6. A warning to TN residents: If you snail mail your state return, and it was prepared with a commercial package you will be FINED $25! This is the exact opposite of the NY law that mandates free e-file. The hidden hand of the tax preparers is quite clear in the creation of this law. Essentially, if you use a commercial software package, you must pay to e-file. It’s better to just use TN’s online filing system, which is free, and buy the HRblock fed-only package. I got HRblock Deluxe download (Fed only) for $14.95 a few weeks ago on Amazon.

  7. Jonathan – can you please review the tax software for S corporation. I know you own one, so how do you do those taxes. Also what are the deadlines for filling extension of S corporation. Any advise.

    • I hire an accountant to do the taxes for the S-Corp. I did it one year with TurboTax for Business, but I decided that paying a professional was a better value for my situation.

  8. If you just go to Walmart you can get the basic H&R Taxcut for $14.95. no state included. But who cares. You can file the state for free through your states website.

  9. H&R Block Desktop Deluxe + State 2019 again for $19.99 at Amazon
