I forgot about this card – The Citi mtvU Platinum Select Visa Card is a credit cards for college students, that offers an interested array of perks. Like the Citi Professional Card, it is part of the Citi ThankYou Network. The card gives you 5 ThankYou Points for every dollar you spend at restaurants, bookstores, record stores, movie theaters and video rental stores. But guess what is considered a bookstore, no matter what you buy? Amazon.com! This is the same as 5% back in gift cards or 5% cash back towards your student loans.

The only problem is that there are reports that they verify if you are a student. Some get asked, many slip by. If you are a student, you also get some points for having good grades: “250 to 2,000 ThankYou Points? twice a year for a good GPA. 25 ThankYou Points? a month for paying your bill on time and not going over your credit limit.” So get a 4.0 and pay your bills and get $43 for free every year! There’s no annual fee and even no minimum income or cosigner requirement. I bet anyone under 25 gets approved for this automatically. I’m over but hey, I’m a student now 😉

  1. They also offer 0% APR for 6 months with no initial balance transfer fee, but remember not to mix cards meant for purchases with 0% APR cards unless the 0% APR is on both purchases and BTs.

  2. Anyone know what happens with this account when you stop being a student (i.e. graduate) ?

  3. How is 5% cash back on student loan works? Please explain. Thanks.

  4. 2,500 ThankYou Points = $25 check towards your university or student loan company. So each point is like a cent towards student loans.

    5 Points per dollar means it’s the same as 5% back for anything you buy at Amazon.com, restaurants, and all the other stuff listed.

    Hopefully after they verify me (if they do) they’ll forget about me 😉

  5. And don’t forget, cardmembers also get 10% off at http://www.shop.mtv.com. mtv.com often has CDs at lower prices than Amazon, so 10% statement credit + 5 pts/dollar = a very nice card for CD purchases. 😉

    And Citi likes to round up, I spent $26.48 at mtv.com and got a $3.00 statement credit, and with the 5 pts/dollar, this card became a 16% card for me. 🙂

  6. Quote from Citi page:

    The Citi mtvU Card is a part of ThankYou Network?, a free program that lets cardmembers redeem their points for amazing rewards like:
    * Gift cards
    * Travel
    Plus Exclusive mtvU rewards like:
    * VIP Passes to mtvUs Spring Break
    * Tickets to MTV’s Video Music Awards

    There is not a word about cash back. Can you redeem those points for cash the way DIVIDEND PLATINUM SELECT? CARD works? How do you redeem cash, request a check upon accumulating $50 (50k points)?

  7. Straight cash back is only towards student loans. See ThankYouNetwork site for more options. I personally get Target gift cards.

  8. I’ve used the “Thank You Network” for my student loans for the $100 bonus signs for the Citi Prof and Simplicity cards. It’s pretty straight forward, though it took about a month for me to receive the check. But like Jonathan said, its not cold cash, but the options are pretty good as to how to get the equivalent of money.

    Anyone know if you can switch card types with Citi? I have three Citi cards already (Simplicity and Prof for the BT game and then the Dividend Plat Select) and don’t realy want to keep reapplying. Think they’ll let me switch the Div Plat Select to the mtvU card (I am a part time student)? I have that Chase card just laying around which is basically the same as the Div Plat Select…

  9. So it’s either $100 get 3% reward or get nothing and 5% reward.

    Can I get $100 plus 5% reward?
