Update: There is now a $10 off $50 gift card at participating malls, $5 off $25+ at Shell Gas, $25 off $75 at Ticketmaster.com, and $50 off $250 at Travelocity. If you have more than one American Express card, you can link one per unique Twitter account.

American Express is definitely one of the more creative card issuers when it comes to using new social media and technology. This time around they want to you to use Twitter #hashtags to earn discounts at various merchants.

  1. Link your Twitter account at sync.americanexpress.com/twitter.
  2. Register your American Express card.
  3. Tweet specific #hashtags to sign up for specific offers. You’ll get a confirmation almost immediately that you are enrolled via an @reply back.
  4. See what’s available and easily enroll by retweeting the offers on this page.

AmEx also has similar promotions going on with Foursquare and Facebook.

  1. I only see a two that I might be able to use.. McDonalds and maybe Gulf Oil if I can find one nearby, but still pretty creative.

  2. These are great! I got the McDonald’s and Whole Foods …. they send you an email telling you of the credit immediately when the charge is made.

  3. Too bad about all these promotions that use twitter and facebook. no chance I’ll open accounts and connect those to my credit cards.

  4. I did this offer on Twitter yesterday. Jonathan, are you sure that you are allowed to sign up multiple cards? I’m pretty sure that I read that you are only allowed one credit total (ie not one each for Twitter & Facebook).

  5. Is it only me who thinks its too risky to sync credit card with twitter. All it takes is one data breach and all your stuff will be tweeted.
its not worth $5 or $20

  6. Aman,

I’m pretty sure that you only have to give American Express your credit card information so Twitter doesn’t have access to it. Since Amex already has access to your credit card information before this, I wouldn’t be too concerned.

Back in March – linked all of my 9 amex cards to 8 different twitter accounts and it worked very well – received all the promised credits on WF, BB, & MDs. The easiest way to do this – buy $25 gift cards at Shell stations and use them up later.

  8. Albrecht says

meant 9 to 9, of course

  9. Cooper's Dad says

I’m already taking advantage of the Amex/FourSquare deals…they generous and it’s very easy to set up. Is there confirmation that the Twitter program is permitted *in addition to* FourSquare’s or Facebook’s? In other words, multiple cards times multiple social platforms = multiplied savings??

  10. @Cooper’s Dad – I know that you can use multiple AmEx’s by linking each one up with a separate social platform, but I don’t know if you can use the exact promo anymore twice with the same card + different platforms like you used to. AmEx is usually pretty good about giving you confirmation that the promo is successfully linked up.

  11. I have never used a outlet mall gift card before. How do these work? Can I use them in any store in that mall, say Nike or Banana Republic, if they happen to have a location in the mall?

  12. @Pam – I’m pretty sure that’s how it works. I would make sure at the specific mall chain that you use. Some malls use the American Express gift card that is actually good anywhere that takes American Express.
