Amazon Prime, in case you don’t know, is a premium service where you get free 2nd-day shipping on most items with no minimum order amount, even if you’re just spending $5. Very convenient, especially since not all items qualify for the “Free Super Saver Shipping”. The normal cost for turning Amazon into your impulse-buying superstore is $79 per year (not available to Alaska, Hawaii, P.O. boxes, APO/FPO and U.S. territories).

Even if you’ve had a trial with them before, try signing up for their new 1 month free trial offer. I’ve had a trial before and I was still approved for a free month. Perfect timing, as it runs through 12/23. 😉 If you don’t qualify, you may try signing up with a new e-mail address + new credit card number.

You’ll need to supply a credit card, but you can set it so you don’t even have to remember to cancel if you take the following steps:

  1. Click on Your Account.
  2. If you’re not there yet, scroll down and click on More Order Actions > Manage Prime Membership.
  3. Look for green text. Click on the Do Not Upgrade button and you won’t automatically be charged $79 anymore. It’ll just end. You’ll still get the entire 1st month of free Amazon Prime shipping.

  1. I can’t even get to the page describing the trial. When I click on the link, it takes me to a regular Prime sign-up page. I guess that trial I did years ago still disqualifies me…

  2. Through Amazon, I also found a free subscription to ESPN The Magazine for those interested – http://tinyurl.com/ydgr3mq

  3. I have been using the Prime service the past year and absolutely love it. Just about everything is available via the prime service, you get your stuff really fast, and you don’t have to pay tax like you would in a bricks and mortar store.

I buy everything from replacement water filters to electronics via Amazon and their prices/service can’t be beat.

  4. When you click on the link, if you are eligible you should reach a page that says “Try Amazon Free For One Month”. If you clear cookies in your browser you’ll see it, but whether you get it after logging in may change.

  5. Does any one know how strict Amazon is about inviting others to share in the Prime membership? Does Amazon check to see if the other “household” members are at the same mailing address?

  6. thanks amazingly it worked!

  7. Everything I looked at that was eligible for Prime Shipping was was more expensive than not, with shipping included. For example, one DVD was $1 plus $3 shipping, but the only prime available were starting at $7 or $8.

  8. Thanks for the link. I normally try to qualify for Free Super Saver shipping, but will enjoy a month of free prime.

  9. Yep, I managed to get this as well even though I had previously done a trial four years ago. I did have to start with fresh cookies, which is a bit odd.

  10. My wife signed up for Prime last year and was able to share it with family members around the country (5 total, I believe) . . .

  11. Even though Amazon’s Prime service isn’t available to APO/FPO (impossible to get mail there in two days) I’ve noticed that items ship a lot faster (used to wait a day or two before items shipped) and I don’t pay shipping on anything. It truly is a great service and well worth the $79 a year.

I have used Amazon sparingly to sell books. Since I’m just a Joe Schmo seller, I can’t ship via prime. I’m sure it’s a good service, but I can tell you when I sell on Amazon my prices are almost always one of the lowest, so by focusing on quick shipping you are lowering your total number on sellers. So it might make sense some of the time, but not always. Depends on your needs.

  13. no dice for me even after clearing cookies

  14. thank you!

  15. I love being a prime member and have been one for several years as are several of my friends. It’s super convenient for gifts as the item gets to the recipient invariably within 2 business days. Great for last minute shopping. I even bought two Macs last year (gifts for us 🙂 and they arrived in perfect condition and were WAY less expensive that I could find anywhere else.

I do feel for the sellers that aren’t able to use it, as I (and probably others) usually don’t look at anything without prime or at least free shipping (regarding media sales at least).

If the item isn’t free shipping I’ll shop around using money back (or credit on a discover card, etc) sites or via evreward.com – I’ve saved a bunch of money that way using bing cashback, ebates, etc. Lots of good coupons out there to use in conjunction with those sites, which are easy to find in a search.

  16. I just clicked on your link to get a trial of Amazon Prime, after I logged in, I read the FAQ about this:

“How do I get FREE Two-Day Shipping?
Place items in your Shopping Cart by clicking “Add to Cart with FREE Two-Day Shipping.”
    Proceed to checkout.
    Click “Start my Free Trial.”
You can also start a free trial of Amazon Prime from the checkout page by selecting “FREE Two-Day Shipping” as your shipping speed”

**do I need to BUY something at checkout to activate this trial??**

  17. The decision for Amazon Prime (which is a cool program) is pretty easy since they provide your purchase history.

With my kid’s schedule, it’s great. I can order something and receive it in the mail usually faster than I can get to Lowe’s (2 miles away). Amazon’s awesome.

This is a great site. Found it a short while ago looking for information on LDW when renting a car and found this site to be one of the few blogs in which comments were actually useful. Thanks.

  18. Thanks. Worked for me even though I had a PRIME membership many years ago.
