To My Patient Bloglines Readers

My Money Blog has partnered with CardRatings and may receive a commission from card issuers. Some or all of the card offers that appear on this site are from advertisers and may impact how and where card products appear on the site. MyMoneyBlog.com does not include all card companies or all available card offers. All opinions expressed are the author’s alone.

Another feedback from my readers using Bloglines is that entries keep popping up as unread. My apologies, that is definitely annoying. (I don’t use Bloglines myself.) It is mostly due to my obsessive need to re-edit my posts for spelling or grammatical errors.

In order to fix this, if you aren’t already, log into Bloglines and go to this feed. Now, on your top right there should be a tab called “edit subscription”. Click on it. Now where it says “Updated Items”, change the option from “Display As New” to “Ignore”. Thanks to Rebecca for the tip.

Comments

  1. I’m not 100% sure of this, but I thought the other reason for your entries showing as “new” in Bloglines is when people add comments.

  2. Really? Hmm. People say it’s just my blog though, if that were the case wouldn’t all blogs be affected?

Although my RSS feed does show the number of comments too, maybe when that updates it seems like the whole entry is updated.

  3. I don’t think the comments make the posts appear new… it’s your incessant fiddling with them that does. Just kidding. I did notice your posts seem to refresh frequently in Bloglines, but it didn’t annoy me enough to unsubscribe you. Yet. 😉

  4. I’m 80% sure that it’s due to the comments. In your RSS feed, it has a link that says “# comments”, where “#” changes as comments are added. Bloglines probably just detects the change and thinks the article has been updated. I’m pretty sure this also happens with other blogs that have the # of comments in the RSS feed. Other blogs just have “Comments” without the number.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. This way, readers can be notified when comments have been submitted.

  5. Oh yes. This helps a lot. I had this with a few other blogs too. But your items came back everyday. Do you edit your post everyday?

  6. I RSS the feed into LiveJournal, so I can view everything on one page. It pulls in your posts as a “new item” with each and every edit. It is starting to get annoying, and since it’s an outside pull system, I’m not able to go into the “ignore” option.

It hasn’t caused me to remove the feed from my aggregate page, but it is getting there. AFAIK, your’s is the only one that does that, so I don’t think it’s the comments thing.

  7. Aha! It *is* the feed. I am using the Better Feed plugin for WordPress, and after digging through the comments this is a known issue.

  8. Okay, I have removed the part of the plugin that updates the number of comments, hopefully that helps reduce the severity of this.
