OptionsHouse Promotion Code FIRE for Free Kindle Fire

OptionsHouse has a new promotion where you can get a free Amazon Kindle Fire if you open a new account with $10,000 and make 15 trades within 90 days of funding. Use the promotional code FIRE. You must keep the $10k there for 180 days after original funding date. Expires December 31, 2012.

Trades are cheap at $3.95 per trade, so 15 trades would cost less than $60. The Kindle Fire costs $199. Assuming you did everything in a timely manner and ignoring any trading profits or losses, you’d be netting $140 or so on a $10,000 investment in 6 months, much more than the 1% a savings account is paying right now for an entire year. This is not a crazy-hot bonus, but is a good one if you’re already in the market for a new discount broker. I have an account at OptionsHouse and it satisfies all my requirements of a broker.

More fine print:

(1) The free Kindle Fire promotion applies only to newly funded OptionsHouse customers who initially fund their account within 60 days of completing the application. To be eligible for the Kindle Fire, you must satisfy both of the following requirements: (1) Fund a new OptionsHouse account with a minimum of $10,000 for a cash or margin account using promo code FIRE; (2) Make 15 commissionable trades within 90 days after funding your new OptionsHouse account. Note: Commission-free trades do not qualify toward the 15 trades. Fulfillment of the free Kindle Fire will occur within 30 days once both requirements are fully satisfied. Limit one promotional item per household please.

I have heard that with the Kindle you can only download ebooks from Amazon and that with the Kindle Fire, Amazon tracks all your browsing and purchasing. Does anyone who actually owns one of these things know if this is true?

  2. Dan Says:

@Donald – I have an e-ink Kindle (from last year), and most of the books I read are not from Amazon. Download free Calibre software to convert non-DRM content for use on Kindle.

  3. Ryan Says:

I cant find where it says how long the $10,000 has to stay in my account? Or the trades?

  4. Jonathan Says:

You can send any PDF or certain eBook file types and it will load onto your Kindle, otherwise use Calibre conversion software like Dan said. I also send myself long web articles to read via Instapaper. I usually only buy Kindle books when they are on sale or deeply discounted, most of my books cost $1 with their Special Offers. You can also get library books now on Kindle.

  5. Jonathan Says:

You need to keep the $10k in there for 180 days. Trades must be made within 90 days of funding the account. Funding the account must be within 60 days of account opening.

  6. Alvin Says:

With this, do they still give the 100 free trades? If so, perhaps you actually have to do 115 trades?

  7. Alvin Says:

Shoot, never mind. Coincidentally, I was looking into other options since I want to get away from Zecco and found a site reviewing a bunch of them. Optionshouse was one of their top choices and looks like the 100 free trades is just another sign-up promo code, so you can only use one at a time. The code is ACAT100REFUND, which technically has a $395 value. Could have a catch though lol. Referrals also give you $150 or 30 free trades. Very interesting place.

Has anyone else done this? I finally got my account funded this week – made my 16 trades today (8 buys and 8 sells). Now we’ll see how long it takes to get the Fire…

  9. epineapple Says:

I completed the requirements on 12/09/2011, called them on 12/19/2011 and was told to wait for 30 days, had instant chat on 12/29/2011 and the rep said he will pass this to their Sales dept. to submit an order and expect 7-10 business on delivery. I’ve got an email that gave you contact info for the vendor they used to fulfill the order. When I called, no one answered. Still waiting…

  10. Michael Bogle Says:

@epineapple: Same story here. Completed the requirements on 12/15, still waiting. I had an online chat with a CSR on 1/6, but all he did is repeat the terms of the offer, that the Fire would be mailed within 30 days of completion of all requirements – he did at least confirm that all requirements had been met. If I haven’t gotten anything by next week, I’ll start making more noise.

  11. epineapple Says:

@Michael: I called their fulfillment partner linksunlimited at 877.884.0048 today and was told they will start shipping later this week and you will receive it by the end of next week via UPS(no signature required). It should have been my X’mas gift…

  12. epineapple Says:

I just got mine on 01/16/12, it works great. However, I was not happy after learning that you are not able to install applications from Android Market.

  13. Michael Says:

Do a search for “android market kindle fire” and you’ll find fixes. Here’s one:

  14. epineapple Says:

Thanks! I will take a look.

  15. Michael Says:

Some look rather complicated though…not sure what I’ll do when I get it…if I get it :-)
