Got My Cingular Wireless Education Discount

I blogged a month ago about Cingular offering service discounts based purely on having a (or access to a) school or corporate e-mail address. Just got my new bill today – it’s usually $80 for two lines with taxes, but this month it was for only $32.40! I was supposed to get 15% off a month, no idea what of funky pro-rated math they did to get that number. But hey, I won’t be asking any questions =)

There was no verification beyond receiving one e-mail from them, although I suppose they could have called my school, but I doubt it. With this and my lower cable bill, I’m happily minimizing my monthly subscriptions without actually dropping the service.

Update: I found out you can also get education discounts at AT&T, Sprint, Nextel, Verizon, and more.

Hey, this is awesome! I plugged in my Lockheed Martin work address and it looks like I’m eligible for a 25% discount! I knew we had a discount for Cingular, but I thought it was just for new service. Hopefully they do the same funky math with my bill that they did with yours and I end up paying only two bucks a month or something. Thanks a lot for the info!

I am not sure how it happened but a few months ago, AT&T Wireless stated that I was part of AARP so I began getting a 20% discount. So anytime I call about my account, I have to confirm this small detail.

Hey, Jonathan, thanks for motivating me. My employer sent an email around a month ago about this, but I hadn’t gotten around to it. I only get an 8% discount, which sucks, and I had to renew my contract to get it, but we just started a 2 yr contract in August so I don’t mind starting the clock over.

I didn’t have to extend my contract at all, I’m very happy that this was so easy.

  5. Employee or Student Discounts for Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, Nextel, and More » My Money Blog Says:

[...] Just about every major cell phone provider has discount for large corporations or groups, even when it’s a personal line. While most people know about their company’s discount, some do a bad job of advertising them. In addition, many students can get discounts using their school e-mails in some of these programs. Others require you to be an employee of the university, which many students also are. So grab your work or school e-mails, visit these links, and find out what discounts are available to you. You may be pleasantly surprised! I was able to get 15% off with Cingular Premier using my student e-mail. [...]
