Free iPod Nano Offer From KeyBank
KeyBank is offering a free 1 GB iPod Nano for opening a checking account and either starting direct deposit or opening a credit card. No special link, it’s right splat on their front page. (I better not hear “We are not aware of this offer” later on!) I’m going for the direct deposit as credit checks are valuable. The catch is that you must live in an area that KeyBank serves to open an account. Worth a shot!
Fine Print:
*You must open a Key Express Free Checking (this is the basic banking account in NY), Key Advantage Checking or a Key Privilege Checking account between July 23, 2006, and September 9, 2006, and have a direct deposit transaction or obtain a KeyBank credit card by October 31, 2006, and you will receive your iPod within 60 days of meeting the requirements. Offer available to individuals without an existing checking account at KeyBank. Employees of KeyBank, its affiliates and subsidiaries are not eligible for this offer. Limit one free iPod nano per individual. Free iPod nano offer valid until September 9, 2006, or while supplies last. The value of the iPod nano will be reported on Form 1099-INT. iPod? nano is a registered trademark of Apple Computer, Inc. All rights reserved. Apple is not a participant of this promotion.
**If you close your account within 180 days of account opening, you will be charged a $25 account early closure fee. Other miscellaneous charges may apply.

The big question for this deal is whether you need a real direct deposit or if an ach push from paypal, ing, etc will count. Hopefully someone will find out soon.

from the legal blurb it sounds like you have to maintain $10K in the acct or you’re hit with a $25/mnth charge…

I’m not sure if it’s worth it if you have to pay 25 dollars a month if you don’t put 25,000 in the account. It says this:
?Maintain $25,000 or more in any combination of qualifying accounts, including sweep balances, deposits, investments, credit balances and retirement accounts, and the monthly maintenance service charge of $25 is waived. The Key Privilege checking account is automatically set up with this interest-bearing, FDIC-insured deposit account as the sweep option.

I just checked it out and signed up for their free checking account (with $50 initial deposit) and a credit card. I really didn’t want to start using direct deposit with them, as I am please with the way my banking is going now with Bank of America, and I don’t want any spliffs. But, I also didn’t like the fact that their credit cards have high(er than what I have) interest rates. But yes, I did read the fine print, and it says nothing about having to use the credit card before you get your iPod.
On a side note, I did not notice anywhere else after the main page anything regarding the iPod, which makes me wonder. Dah well. Let me know how you make out.

I would be very interested in knowing if HSBC/Emigrant/ING/USAA incoming pushes count as a direct deposit with Key Bank.

Is there no choice for Free Checking for some regions? The Free Checking, which has an opening minimum of $50 and no minimum balance. According to the terms above this is ok. I’m going to set this up in-branch, so I don’t have to mail anything back in.
The $25 seems to be part of the Privilege account, which is their premium account.

I went to a branch today and applied. No big signs, but just printouts of the offers on the desks.
Deposited $50, just need to start direct deposit. I’m not sure if I will simulate one via HSBC or just split my current direct deposit.
I can’t wait for my Nano, my iPod Mini battery is not lasting very long anymore!

I just checked and this service is not offered in Houston, Texas. Oh well!
FYI, Chase had a similar offer about 6 months ago. They gave me a 2GB Ipod Nano (which I love). I had to maintain 15k in the account otherwise I would have paid $15/mo fee. When I got the first $15 hit, I called chase and they switched my account to a “more basic” account, which meant no more $15 monthly charges. I still got the Ipod Nano, since I had fulfilled all obligations by then. I love Chase now – they have a customer for life!

It looks like there are some fees to be noted:
“**If you close your account within 180 days of account opening, you will be charged a $25 account early closure fee. Other miscellaneous charges may apply.”
It looks like there may also be a “monthly maintenance service charge of $25″

It seems like you can fund this with a credit card. Does the Fidelity Mastercard count this as a purchase or a cash advance?

I’m not so sure that you have to have to pay any monthly fee. When I click on their fees and doesn’t say anything about that

Has anyone confirmed that an ACH transfer from an online savings account will work for this?
I’d prefer not to split my direct deposit from work, but if I need to for a month, I will.
Thanks

When I made my ACH transfer, it is shown as “Direct Deposit – HSBC XXXXXX”. But I don’t know if they look at it manually or not. If you could split your direct deposit, I’d do it just for a month. Hey, it’s worth a free Nano

This offer is very cool. I opened a key bank checking account on sept. 1st along with a credit card instead of direct deposit.
On sept. 23rd, I received a 2nd generation silver color iPod nano (opposed to 1st generation black color ipod shown on the keybank website) of 2GB capacity (opposed to 1 GB as advertised in keybank website). It’s a much much better offer than I expected.
