KeyBank is offering a free iPod Touch if you:

  • Open a Key Express Free checking account by July 30, 2010 (No monthly maintenance service charge, no minimum balance requirement)
  • Make one KeyBank Rewards debit card transaction
  • Make a combination of two direct deposits and/or automated payments each of $100 or more by October 1, 2010

You can get an additional $25 iTunes card if you open a checking account with higher balance requirements. The catch is that I think you must live in an area that KeyBank serves to open an account. (Update: Cleveland, Eastern OH, Idaho, Western NY, Oregon, Seattle Cascades, South Puget Sound, Central NY, Rochester, Maine, Northwest OH, Michigan, and Capital Region NY.) I still have my iPod Nano from a previous KeyBank offer. Additional details in the fine print:

You must have or request a KeyBank Rewards debit card (Key Privilege Select clients must have or request a KeyBank Rewards World debit card) and enroll in the KeyBank Rewards program. There is a $20 annual fee for the KeyBank Rewards Program that will be waived for the first year. Qualifying debit card transactions include signature, PayPass®, and PIN-based purchases only. Direct deposit transactions are limited to: payroll, Social Security, pension, and government benefits. Automated payments exclude Key Bill Pay, debit card automated payments, PayPal® transactions, and account-to-account balance transfers. Limit one iPod touch® per qualifying account. Limit one iPod touch® per individual. The value of the iPod touch® and, if applicable, the $25 iTunes® card will be reported on Form 1099-INT. You will receive your iPod touch® within 90 days of meeting requirements. Offer available to individuals without an existing checking account at KeyBank as of 4/30/10. Employees of KeyBank, its affiliates, and subsidiaries are not eligible for this offer. If you close your account within 180 days of account opening, you will be charged a $25 account early closure fee. Accounts overdrawn or closed as of 10/1/10 are not eligible for this offer.

  1. Where is this promotion available?
The offer is not available in all areas. Individuals and businesses will only be eligible in the following districts: Cleveland, Eastern OH, Idaho, Western NY, Oregon, Seattle Cascades, South Puget Sound, Central NY, Rochester, Maine, Northwest OH, Michigan, and Capital Region NY.

  2. Keybank does not serve my area, they in fact only serve 14 states. I am in CA.

  3. I did their previous Garmin GPS promotion. Worked like a charm, plus I closed that account earlier this year so it looks like I’m eligible for this one too. Sweet!

  4. Seth @ Boy Meets Food says

Wow, their coverage area is awfully limited. I was looking forward to picking up an ipod touch. Oh well.

  5. Can I close the account online later?

  6. How can I do automatic payments to meet the requirments? Thanks!

  7. Any idea where their service area is?

  8. From their faqs page: The offer is not available in all areas. Individuals and businesses will only be eligible in the following districts: Cleveland, Eastern OH, Idaho, Western NY, Oregon, Seattle Cascades, South Puget Sound, Central NY, Rochester, Maine, Northwest OH, Michigan, and Capital Region NY.

  9. According to the very fine print (found on the FAQs page)

  10. Paypal usually works for direct deposit requirements… send some money both ways.

  11. I’m on the same boat as Young. What actually counts as automated payments? I don’t have direct deposit so I’ll have to do the automated payments, but I’m not sure what would qualify. Thanks

  12. Is anyone else getting a message that says the offer code doesn’t match with the account type (although the account is one of the ones that is eligible and the offer code is entered automatically)?

  13. I tried a NYC zip code, and the following error came up….

    Unable to complete your request.

We are unable to complete your request. Please visit your local branch to open an account.

  14. How did you get the older promotion Jonathan?

I thought you lived in CA. Or was the coverage back then different?

  15. Is it true that we can simply transfer money from PayPal every month to fulfill the direct deposit requirement? Also does debit card transaction mean one has to use his/her pin at the cashier but not the credit card type of transaction?

  16. “Direct deposit transactions are limited to: payroll, Social Security, pension, and government benefits. Automated payments exclude Key Bill Pay, debit card automated payments, PayPal® transactions, and account-to-account balance transfers.”

Just so everyone knows, it turns out that this offer is only valid in certain marketing areas. I have a keybank .5 mile away in Roy, Utah but I am not eligible for this offer.

  18. has anyone gotten it yet? I met my requirements and I’m dying to get it. Hopefully it won’t really be 90 days to wait.

  19. shame its not available in my area would have liked to get my hands on one. Seems like the coverage area is very limited.

  20. Unfortunately, it’s not available for residents of Pennsylvania either. :O(

  21. Opened a basic checking account few days ago and the process was a breeze. Got a phone call from a local KeyBank branch the next morning to confirm the application and the rep was fully aware of the iPod promotion. She mentioned the required debit card transaction in order to qualify for the promotion can be a pin-based transaction or a credit card-like transaction. Will see how long it takes to get the welcome packet as well as the iPod…

  22. This is lame. I live in central Ohio, and there are Key Banks in the area. What’s with only allowing those in parts of Ohio get the reward?

  23. Steinchen says

I signed up for this approximately 6 weeks ago and just received my IPod yesterday. This is a nice deal! My branch is the one in the International District of Seattle. The woman who helped me open my new account was very helpful, writing down exactly what I needed to do to qualify. I have had no problems with Key Bank and I am very happy with this deal. The IPod looks great, has 8 Gb and is WORTH the effort! Good luck to those in the right areas.

  24. Steinchen says

Forgot to mention. The IPod came within about 2 weeks of my qualifying. I didn’t have to do anything else, it just arrived at my house in a FedEx envelope, a really nice surprise, and of course, I was also sceptical that it would happen this fast! Thank you Key Bank for keeping your promise!

  25. Does the debit card transaction also have to be $100?

  26. Can anyone tell me whether you’ve received the 2nd or *3rd* generation 8gb iPod Touch? Thanks.

  27. The 8gb IPod Touch is 1st generation according to Key customer service. Also if you signed up for this promotion make sure you get the rewards debit card or you will never qualify. If I had not checked into my qualification status I would of never qualified in time for the promotion deadline in October.

  28. Cybershaman says

I satisfied all of the requirements to receive my iPod but when I called to confirm this they said that we didn’t get a “Marketing Number” when we opened our account and therefore were not eligible. I rechecked the rules at https://www.key.com/gen/html/mkt-q210-touch-faq.html and saw no mention of this requirement. The branch manager I spoke to is looking into this and I am awaiting a call back. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that this hidden detail will disqualify us. Has anyone else had this problem and, if so, did it get resolved? This sounds to me like an unfair business practice. If having a Marketing Number is a requirement then it should be clearly stated on the rules page. Since it is not, I believe we are owed one iPod Touch… 🙂

  29. Within what time frame has anyone received the iPod after fulfilling the requirements ???? is it really close to 90 days or before. Thanks.

  30. I got mine a few days ago. So yeah t was pretty close to 90 days.

    It’s a 2g iPod mc068ll/a

  31. iPod n MSFT says

I opened my account in July around the last couple of days of the promotion and completed the requirements ( one debit card purchase and two direct deposits) by end of Aug. I just got my iPod Touch and it is a 3rd gen 8 GB one. Enjoying it 🙂

  32. Did you get any notification that you qualified or did your ipod just show up?

  33. I can’t wait to receive our iPod! We did this so my husband could have one (I have one) but the other day my touch screen got shattered….so I feel quite “lost” without my iPod..haha. We fulfilled the requirements about 4 weeks ago, so hopefully soon. Also…someone said theirs was a 2nd generation, and someone else said 3rd…I’m grateful for either, but a 3rd would be pretty cool!

  34. bah! Mine apparently shipped today, or that’s what the teller told me. So what generation will it be? Will it be the newer one, or does key and apple have an under the table deal, and key gets to give away all the unsold touches? I will be very sad if I have to sell my little ipod touch to get a camera.

  35. Quick note on the 2nd vs 3rd generation issue. In the 8GB version, the only difference between 2nd and 3rd generation iPod touches is the software. Check out the timeline at the bottom of the Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Touch).

  36. Received my 4th gen (!!), 8gb ipod touch today!
