  1. Just remember, the minimum you can donate is $20!

  2. Is Discover also waiving all fees it charges charities for accepting their card? THAT would divert much more money to the charities.

Thanks for sharing this. I know Haiti will probably still need a lot more donations but the extent of giving so far around the world has been really excellent.

  4. Unfortunately much of the money donated will never reach the people. If you know anything about Haiti the government is _extremely_ corrupt and even though they have a population of around 9M they cannot seem to pull out of their poverty ‘funk’ Look at the size of debt forgiveness and the amount of subsidies that are given to the country and common sense will show you how bad the situation is.

How do you help, instead of ponying up cash now just to appease your compassion and necessity to make yourself feel good make a real difference through things like microlending. Give a hand-up, not a hand out.

  5. After 4 days, Discover card has readhed the $1 Million matching limit.
Jen, not only is discover waiving the fees, but the top 3 payment networks are waiving credit card transaction fees hor Haiti relief:

Despite all the bad things about Capital One, they don’t charge a processing fee when you donate through their No Hassle Giving Site. However, from personal experience, it takes about 2-6 weeks for the charity to receive the funds.

  6. Joe, I agree that if we want to help rebuild Port-au-Prince, we should be careful where the money goes. But right now the focus is on supplies and medical aid and these all run through international organizations that you can check on charitynavigator.org. Donate to Doctors Without Borders and you know your money will be put to good use.

  7. Wow, I’m surprised their matching dollar for dollar – good for them! I hope Haiti can pull through this terrible mess.
