Being Poor. Lots of buzz around it, hundreds of comments too.

One line that struck me was:

Being poor is knowing your kid goes to friends’ houses but never has friends over to yours.

I don’t feel I’ve ever been poor at all, but I used to not invite my friends over because I was ashamed to show them our family’s small 2 bedroom apartment (which was smaller than the apartment my wife and I currently live in together alone), while they lived in big nice houses. I wonder if my parents ever knew. I hope not, they’ve provided me with more than I could ever ask for.

Anyways, read the post and the interesting comments too. Don’t miss the last line of the post.

  1. Thanks for this link. I ended up at about 4 sites that were linked to it and found some really interesting stuff.

I’m always struck by how people in society tend to judge others based on their own experiences. Poverty is definitely one of those areas that it happens a lot. Until someone knows how it feels to be poor and all the limitations it causes, they really can’t judge someone who is poor, and even then, they still probably don’t know what it’s like to walk in that person’s shoes.

  2. One of his inclusions was living next to a freeway, however these days I see all sorts of big houses being built right next to the freeway…but I get the point.

  3. it is amazing to see the break down ,and how the so called people of higher learning who hold job in goverment really have so little common sense, that in this tragedy,we now see or should the effect not of the storm but of those in leadership who have failed ,and remember the saying which ring,s truer since the carter admin, lack of strong leadship has shown ,why should people follow or listen ,when lied to and only told what they want to hear,,we play politic ,race cards ,and refuse to take full responsibilty for are actions…someone need to make the hard call, being poor and i know what poor is ,and those hell $800 lucky if they were $200 cars and and figuring what to [pay while those from the top down always say what there doing or going to do for you wake up america ,doesn,t matter if there black white or what ever are political leader luv to use the poor and want as many of those so called activst for them to stay just that way ,otherwise they would be out a job…also been to many places in this world india being one ,,,were there poor is poor and and no while we scream and cry what we didn,t get ,be sure in many part are poorest would be considered rich,,,we need to do what the goveremnt doesn,t use common sense ,stop blaming relie on are self and stop acting as if being poor is an excuse for bad behavior or for giving up or for expecting someone else to bail us out .

  4. Dear Mr. Scalzi,
being poor is not about being poor, it’s about being rich!
It is pay back time for all those gutless wonders who stole, your beautiful girlfriend, your job, your career and your future, your intellectual or creative endeavour, all your hard work to make a better world, your inspiration, your willingness to share and care, your ability to forgive, (you know, all that” the meek shall inherit the earth crap”). not only do they want to steal everything of worth you have but they don’t have any idea on what to do with it when they’ve got it. They just sit on their stash and wait till the cockroaches get it or until it crumbles into dust. The rich know in their cold hearts that they are wrong and they feel guilty, so to make it all feel better they screw you into the ground, scared shitless that the poor bastards they’ve ripped off will come and get them one day..
Sit under the night skies on a bright starry night and a big full moon and you will know the truth, that no possession, no money, no clothes will make you a better person and that the only thing we have got that is of any real value in this world is how we behave and how we treat our fellow humans.

  5. Being poor is what happens to you when you’re too stupid to realize you need to go to college. I work in public service and I am so sick of seeing people day in and day out who sit on their fat asses at home instead of working, who were raised in a culture of welfare generation after generation and believe those of us who work our assess off should continue to support them. I’m tired of seeing immature, irresponsible people who make shitty choices and expect others to deal with the consquences. Wake the fuck up.

  6. > I work in public service and I am so sick of seeing people

    > off should continue to support them.

You work in “public service” you say? Does that mean that you’re being paid by all of us, say via our taxes? Are we paying you to publically “serve” these people that you’re putting down here so bitterly… whose very existence is what pays your own bills?

Sounds like you should be fired and have to go do some real work huh?
