$250 Bonus for American Express Business Card
The American Express Platinum Business Premium Cash Rebate Card (how’s that for a mouthful?!) is offering a $250 statement credit (removed) after your first purchase. I have no idea what their application requirements are, like if they verify if you actually run a business or not, but it seems like technically you can just apply with your usual SSN and put your own name down as the business name. Might be worth a shot - $250 is a healthy bonus, I thought Citi’s $100 bonus was good. Link via Bargainshare.

For the American Express Business Card offer, I wonder if being a self-directed investor counts as a “business.”
$250 is a nice sign-up bonus.

I see the $250 bonus is for the Platinum card only…but it has a $300 annual fee.
The Gold card annual fee is waived for the first year, but I don’t think the Gold has the signup bonus.

btw, emigrant direct / juniper credit card increased their cash back to 1.40% with no cap.

Since you have your EIN, you should be able to do this without too big a hit. It shouldn’t show up on your personal credit report, right? Apply, get $250, and cancel before they stick you with the fee.

“Bonus of $250 applies to first purchase made between March 1 and June 30, 2006, and will appear as a statement credit on your Card Account. The maximum discount available is $250 per Card Account.”
I’m a little confused by the use of the word “applies” in their statement. Could that possibly mean you get reimbursed up to the amount of the 1st purchase up to $250 no matter what the purchase price? I sure hope not.

1) Still waiting to find out if any individuals are getting approved for this.
2) If individuals are getting these then GF and I are in for $500
3) If it is a statement credit, I’m OK with it. But if it is a ‘one time statement credit’ then we all better run out and get iPod Nano.

I applied even though I do not technically have my own business (I have a website with adsense) and I will let you all know if I get approved. I don’t have an EIN, but the application says that if you don’t enter an EIN they will assume you are a sole proprietorship. If I do get approved, I guess I’ll make sure to have my first purchase be a major one. That wording sounds sneaky. Thanks for pointing it out, Mona.

I applied yesterday using my EIN, and today I got notice I have to call in to verify my business name and address. Well, that’s just my name and home address, so I hope that’s ok. I’ll have to wait until I get home.

Just got approved after applying last night. Over on fatwallet.com someone called and any first purchase gets the $250, enen a .99 newspaper.

Jonathan what did they say when you told them your business name and address? I tried calling and was told they needed a business name not my personal name to verify the business existed.

I applied and was approved. My reading of the terms is that a maximum credit of $250 is only applied to to the first charge, so if you charge less than that, only that that dollar amount is covered. It may be more liberal than this, though.
I’m in the process of starting a business, so I gave them the name that I’m starting it under (although, they wouldn’t accept a period in the name). Ethically, I think you should only apply if you do operate as a business and at least file a Schedule C.

I just called American Express. The credit is given back to you a year later as a rebate.

I got approved as well. I used the name of my website and said I was a sole proprietor. I didn’t have to give them any tax ID# because of this. In real life, I don’t consider my website a business, and I will probably consider it a hobby for tax purposes for as long as possible, for simplicity’s sake. Anyway, a few days after you fill out the online application, they will call you to confirm your address and date of birth. After I get the card, I’ll let you know how the credit works. The woman who approved my card wasn’t familiar with the promotion–she said they change them all the time and don’t keep everyone up to speed, and that I should call the number on the back of my card when I receive it.
