Cingular Premier Discounts: Don’t Miss This
So here I was, paying my Cinglar Wireless bill online, when I notice this little box on their front page called ‘Extra Discounts’. Naturally, I was intrigued. I click on ‘Learn More’ and read:
Cingular has business agreements with thousands of corporations, government agencies and educational institutions to offer wireless products to their employees and families at a significant discount. To determine if you are affiliated with an organization that qualifies for additional savings, we need your work email address.
Ok, so I tried my alumni University e-mail. Guess what - 15% Discount!
To be more precise:
1) You enter your work or school e-mail.
2) They let you know if it qualifies and send you a link to that specific e-mail.
3) You click on that link and it brings to you a page with the discounts available. For me they include $25 Off Any Order Online Only, 15% Service Discount, 25% Accessory Discount, and a $50 Equipment Discount. Some of it only applies to new customers.
4) You click on ‘Register your service with your company’, answer a few quick validation questions, and then I got a page saying:
Congratulations - the certification process is complete!
To the extent you are eligible to receive a service discount, you should start receiving the discount within one (1) to two (2) billing cycles
I’m not University staff, but the wording seems to read that people are eligible as long as they are affiliated with the University. Work people should try their corporate e-mails as well. Definitely worth a try anyways, worst thing they can say is no.
15% off my Family Plan is $10 off a month or $120 a year in savings. Sweet!

On fatwallet.com there is a great thread about cell phone discounts for people connected to companies, universities, etc. For example, I get 25% off for being an employee of NWA (actually I haven’t worked there for over a year but have not been asked to update my status). You might be surprised at the list !

Really? Are you sure the 2-year contract is not for new customers? I am an existing customer and I ain’t signing up for another 2-year contract.
I just did this today, we’ll see what they send me. I’ll have to find that thread too, Meg.

[…] 4) Save on monthly expenses: Haggle your cable bill down by $20 a month, Save 10-15% a month on Cingular by using your school alumni e-mail to get a corporate discount, or drop that landline and save hundreds by switching to VoIP phone service. Depending on your current services, each of these can save you $100 a year. […]

[…] I blogged a month ago about Cingular offering service discounts based purely on having a (or access to a) school or corporate e-mail address. Just got my new bill today - it’s usually $80 for two lines with taxes, but this month it was for only $32.40! I was supposed to get 15% off a month, no idea what of funky pro-rated math they did to get that number. But hey, I won’t be asking any questions =) […]

I work for Cingular, as far as the Premier website is concerned, any medium(50 or more employees) to large company or school who becomes a Premier provider sets up an agreement with Cingular (contract) who determines what ADDITIONAL website discounts their employees receive on top of the Contractural company discount they already give to their employees. The company/school builds a premier website determining what devices/phones and accessories they want to give their employees for additional discounts. Cingular does not make the final determination of what price the subscriber receives in the end through the Premier website. All Premier websites within Cingular, the subscriber/enduser must agree to a 2 yr contract or extended agreement whether you are activating a new line of service, upgrading your phone or adding an additional subscriber to your service. Some companies make an agreement with Cingular whether they want to let the enduser/subscriber have a choice of 1 or 2-yr agreement. If a price is shown on the Premier website for say, $39.99 one day, then the next day or following week that same phone may cost more. The company you’re employed by can change the price of a device/phone or accessory at any time.

In response to “Got my Cingular Wireless Education Disc…” “Just got my new bill today - it?s usually $80 for two lines with taxes, but this month it was for only $32.40! All this means is that the proration is based on when your bill cycle began and ended. If your bill cycle started on April 5th and you began using your company discount program on April 23rd, the proration would begin from April 23rd to May 4th. Then the full amount of the charges would begin May 5th.

Well, I had Cingular for close to 4 years, about 15 months ago I signed up through a company to get a whopping ~$5 off my bill. I stated I was an existing customer.
About a month ago, I got tired of the bad service, dropped calls and switched services. Low and be hold I get a $185 termination fee. Calling Cingular (At&t) business support got me no where except to say that I was contracted through June 2008 and I should have read the agreement better (which I did and don?t remember seeing anything about a 2 year agreement).
Don’t fall for Cingular (now At&t) and sign up for this ‘discount’ as their going to stick it to you. Getting a 1 yr or 2 yr contract for a few bucks off your bill a month is not worth it.
If you are think of signing up for Cingular - don’t. They’re terrible and their business customer service is even worse.
FYI, I am in the process of sending a complaint to Cingular (at&t) about this issue. Also I will be following up every time I get someone/s to either cancel their service or not sign-up with them. So if you fall into either of these categories, please email me and I’ll add you to the growing list and let them know consumers don’t like to be screwed over.
