New Free 411 Service: 1-800-FREE411
I’m cheap - err… frugal, so I’ve only used the 411 service on my cell phone once when it was a work emergency and being late was not an option. And I know I’m not the only one who won’t pay $1.25 for someone with a phone book. But, now, I don’t have to! Enter the newly launched service at 1-800-FREE411 (1-800-373-3411), which is paid for by advertisers. Program this number into your cell phone now. Thank me later =)
I just tried it tonight to call a local restaurant. You first get connected to a computer with voice-recognition software which asks you your city and state. Then you have to spell the name of the business or person. I guess they try to do everything with the computer, but it couldn’t figure out my Italian-sounding restaurant name, so I got transferred to a human, who helped me lickety-split. They even connect you for free! Very, very nice. Supposedly, you have to listen to a 10-second ad, but I didn’t get one.

Also try Google’s SMS service, I often use it instead of Free411: http://www.google.com/sms/

That is cool, I just wish I got free text messages with my cell service. Instead, I have way too many minutes that I don’t use.

I used it today to get Costco, but it couldn’t recognize the name of the store, so it transferred me to a person. Great service, though, thanks for letting me know!!

Thanks for the tip! There’s also 1-800-555-TELL (8355) if you want things like stock quotes, weather forecasts, news updates, etc, all for free. That’s how we get our weather forecast every morning now.

Thank you for the mention! Everyone at 1-800-Free411 strives to keep our service at the top of the heap and we are always looking to you, the caller, for your thoughts and feedback on the service. If you’re a regular user - and it sounds like you are - then you have probably already discovered our latest category search option that allows you to search for a business without a specific business listing, much like an internet search and, as always, there are live operators standing by to help you should you need them, an option that is unique to 1-800-free411.
