Ready to get off Blogger? Dreamhost $77 off Coupon Code

I started MyMoneyBlog on Blogger like many others, but got tired of having my site look like everyone elses (not that mine is all that awesomely designed). But switching to a “real” host costs… money. But to me the flexibility and ability to customize is worth it. I host this blog at Dreamhost, and have teamed up with them to give anyone who signs up for a one-year pre-paid plan $77 off, using the promotional code ‘77OFF1YEAR‘. For the vast majority of bloggers, I recommend their most basic plan, ‘Crazy Domain Insane’. I use this plan and don’t get anywhere near the limits. Here are some of their features:

  • One-click automatic WordPress installations
  • One of the webhosts actually recommended by WordPress.
  • One FREE .com/.net/.org/.info domain (get www.yourblogname.com)
  • IMAP, POP3, and Web-Based email access (get you@yourblogname.com)
  • 150+ GB Storage and 1.5+ TB Transfer
  • 97-day full money back guarantee, excluding domain fees (you get to keep it)
  • Unlimited additional domains hosted (buy more at GoDaddy)
  • … so much more stuff I don’t even know what they mean.

Ok, let’s talk cost. The basic plan, if you pre-pay for one year is $9.95/month with no setup fees. So that’s $119.40. With the coupon, it’s $42.40 for one year, or $3.53/month including a free domain name.

I can try and help with any DreamHost-related blog questions if you want, just ask below. I’ve been pretty happy with them, they respond within 24 hours for e-mails, although I don’t really contact them very much. If you’re site is huge or you want the best support, you’ll have to pay more and I wouldn’t go with Dreamhost. But it’s great for the price.

Does this work for two year pre-payment, too? It’s a bit cheaper that way.

  2. jp Says:

Yep, it works for $77 off two years too, but not $77 each year, just $77 total.

It also works for less than 1-year (month-to-month), but I don’t recall how much (you can try and it should show), but then you have to pay setup fees, which make it a bad deal in my opinion.

It looks good, but there are other, a lot cheaper options — $77 off, but after a year, you’ll be stuck paying $9.95/month.

ixwebhosting.com has a plan for $4.95 (voted top 10 host). Check out other top 10 options here, http://www.i-newswire.com/pr39979.html.

While you might be ’stuck’ paying $9.95/month after a year, it looks like you can host three separate domains with them for that price. So if you have multiple sites, this could be a very good deal. I’ve been using SolidInternet at $29.95/year. It’s been rock solid, but they just raised their prices a bit and I’m paying for three separate accounts with them. Also, they don’t offer WebDav and DreamHost does.

  5. jp Says:

There are definitely cheap hosts out there, it is a very competitive arena. I used to host my family site at 8-95.com, but man they are bare-bones. Checking my e-mail took 30 seconds every time.

I’ve never heard of IX, but I’ve found that every review site’s Top 10 list is different. Dreamhost isn’t even reviewed at all there. I would recommend reading individual reviews at a variety of sites to get a good overall picture. Every host has a few horror stories, but you can get overall trends.

  6. jp Says:

Ah, nickel brings up a good point. Like I said, I also host my family site at Dreamhost, at no additional cost (Get a cheap domain at GoDaddy.com or something). It’s very cool to have ‘jp@mylastname.com’ instead of relying on hotmail forever.

For example, if your last name is Martino try getting martinos.com, themartinos.com, martinofamily.org, etc. One of those is usually available. Then give the e-mails out to all your family members! Somehow mine are impressed that I can do this, like I’m a computer whiz or something =) Everyone even gets free web-based mail access, like Hotmail.

    Interesting.
I have a preety generic and flexible web hosting service. I can’t say it is the least expensive in the market. It is $15 a month (or $180 a year).

    Yet, I haven’t moved.

600 Mb of data and unlimited data transfers… But even yet… I wonder if it makes sense.

  8. Carmen Says:

Is this only for new customers? I’m already a Dreamhost customer - would I be able to pre-pay a year now?

  9. jp Says:

Yes, it is for new customers only. Otherwise I would’ve used it!

  10. fivecentnickel.com Says:

FYI: The $9.95/month plan now allows you to host an unlimited number of domains (pending the space/bandwidth restrictions). Pretty sweet deal.

  11. Jonathan Says:

Dangit, that’s why I upgraded to the more expensive Code Monster plan too! I come nowhere near the bandwidth or storage limits.

  12. Cap Says:

    doh!

yeah that sucks. I was estatic when they allow unlimited domain. suddenly all these scheming domain ideas came to my mind.. heh

you know you can ask ‘em to change if you dont need it.. but miva merchant 4 included is pretty dope.

dreamhost is pretty friendly about change of plans I think. not sure though. I just know I had billing problems before and they resolved it without complainin. it was through messages in the middle of the night during a weekend too.

actually I just checked and yeah I think there’s the 97 day money back guaranteed.

  13. fivecentnickel.com Says:

Yeah, you should be able to downgrade.

  14. Jonathan Says:

Looks like the 97-day guarantee was only for new customers, and I was a current customer upgrading to a nicer plan. But, they credited me for all the unused months, so I thought that was very fair. Thanks for the tips!

  15. Jon Says:

I use http://www.hostgater.com unlimited domains and tons of bandwidth/server space for $9.95. One click installs of everything you can imagine. You can blog til you drop :) I’ve had zero downtime and great support.

  16. Canadian Capitalist Says:

Bit the bullet and got my own site.

    Thanks!

  17. BlogNameUndecided Says:

    $3.53 < $9.95 both have unlimited domains

    $7.95 still < $9.95. I’m in!

  18. george Says:

It looks like you hit the bandwidth limit today? Did you actually go over 1TB? Or do you have the older 120GB transfer limit? It would be nice if Dreamhost could give some warning before shutting down a site.

  19. How DreamHost Made My Day » Silicon Valley Blog About Money Says:

[...] Right after I did the migration, after a mere 3 hours, the power went out for over a day in the middle of a wind storm that left us more than just a bit bored and bothered. This time, the servers went out, but not our trusty blogs! At any rate, I was thrilled I spent the money to outsource the infrastructure, and that was literally not a second too soon! So thank you to all those of you who gave me your suggestions for potential web hosts. It’s working out like a charm so far! [...]

  20. Jesse Says:

I just bought a domain, renewed another domain, and got three years of hosting from godaddy.com. I combined it with a $20 off coupon code found through a google search and paid $80 total. I thought that was a pretty good deal, though they don’t boast (at least not that I know of) one-click wordpress installation.
