ING Direct raises rates to 3.00% APY

ING Direct announced that they are raising the rate on their online savings accounts from 2.80% to 3.00% APY. VirtualBank remains the same at 2.80%, at least when I logged in to check. Competition from Emigrant Direct at 3.25% is great. I guarantee you they were seeing a significant amount of money move out.

Does this rate push you over the edge to want to open an account? You can also get $25 for signing up.

I have an ING account, and I love it. I signed up in January so I didnt get the $25 free :( Do you know if the new rate applys to existing accounts?

Hi Tara - yes the new rates apply to all accounts as of today, both new and existing. Keep on saving, and your interest will dwarf that $25!

I’ve been sticking with ING for the past few months as the new competition comes up with higher rates. I’m glad they finally bumped it up even closer. Emigrant claims they’ll always be the highest though.. if I can get my account setup there at all, I may switch. lol. It is true that for most people, when they finally park their money somewhere, they’re reluctant to move it. I’m sticking around for the customer service, ease of access, and generally more reliable website. (at least from what I read) I sure miss those higher interest days back in 2001.. where online virtual banks were in the rage and rates are as high as 6-7% (even ING was like 6% I believe) who needs mutual funds!?

I’ve just started getting my financial wreck in order and opening a savings account was my first step (thanks to this site, among others, for all the great starting advice). I gotta say it was a nice feeling to wake up this morning and see that higher rate.
