Free $100 for opening a Bank of America checking account

Bank of America is currently running a promotion where you can get $100 for opening any one of their checking accounts. Each state has their own different account types, but there is usually always one that’s free with direct deposit, or free with a ~$1,000 minimum balance. BofA is a huge behemoth now, but I still use them as my primary checking account due to them having branches and ATMs everywhere. I’ve really not had any problems with them at all, and their online bill pay is great. I’ve had one overdraft due to them not making my funds available, but they credited me back the fee. I wish I could have gotten the $100 too, but oh well.

Reading the fine print, you must apply online and use the Offer Code LSP100 when applying and wait a month and a half for the bonus, and the offer expires 4/1/05, so act fast! You may also be able to open the account with a credit card, earning frequent flyer miles or cash back for the opening amount (up to a certain limit), so if you’ve been unhappy with your local bank then this may be a good reason to switch. $100 is twenty fish taco lunches!

They even let you fund the account from a credit card. I wonder if they treat that as a cash advance or if it would work as a charge for cash back. Nice…maybe.

They are also making like ING Direct and offering $25 to [anyone/current account holders?] who open a savings account with them. I have my checking and one (unused) credit card with them. My “signature card” hasn’t come yet though, even though they happily took my $100 deposit. $100 is the minimum to open; must remain in account 45 days. After that, I’m taking my 25% interest and moving it ING or Emigrant.

It might be useful to remind your readers that there are minimum balance requirements to avoid monthly fees… that could seriously bite into the $100 if you aren’t paying attention.

Dan - it may depend on your credit card issuer if it is truly treated as a purchase, i’m pretty sure it’s coded as a purchase by BofA.

Jen - thank for the tip! Do you have a link or anything? I don’t have a savings account, but I’d definitely open one for $25, depending on the minimum balance

Jim - good point, I kinda covered it by saying that they have options that are free with a minimum balance, but yes, if you don’t meet that minimum balance then you may have fees. Again, with direct deposit you should be able to get a free account.

You can open a student account with $25, and there are no minimums for the first six months. You will just have to remember to close the account once you get the money out!

Bank of America has made 5 mistakes on my account in the past 6 months. This time they messed up on a “cash” deposit. The deposit slip was fine. Then two days later (it took two days for a cash deposit to be available) they put in and extra 0 on the end of the deposit. They then promptly deducted that deposit … but the cash deposit is still “pending” for another one or two days … when they decide to actually make it available.

In April I made two deposits, one I told them I think was fraudulant I had a deposit slip for that one! week later I made another deposit it was almost Identical. They lost that one as they do not use deposit slips. That deposit was never made. they take back the frauded check which I never added to my account. but the other I did well they did not and took the fraudulant depost out but that was not till november. This is after a ten day hold and 7 months later. I do not know about other people but over 3400.00 is alot of money to me.
