Unlimited local and long-distance telephone service for $199 a year
Voice over IP (VoIP) telephone services such as Vonage and Broadvoice have been around for a while, offering cheap nationwide calling using your regular telephone over your broadband internet such as DSL or Cable. I’ve been a bit reluctant to switch over, as I use my phone for work a good deal, and fax functions are also important to me. However, with major companies such Comcast and SBC joining the VoIP fray, I think the time has come for it to hit the mainstream. Now, how cheap is it?
I got a letter from SunRocket a couple months ago, advertising a whole year of unlimited nationwide calling for $199 and a free phone with promotion code ‘SRAUD3‘ (type it in the blank on the main page). You get:
Unlimited nationwide calling
Free extra phone number
Up to 100 free international minutes each month
No charge to activate - includes free shipping
No hidden fees
Taxes included in price
No cancellation fees
31 day risk-free guarantee
No termination fee. Return equipment in first month for full refund. Prorated refund of $16.58 per unused month after first month.
Free two handset Uniden phone until 3/15/05 with promotion code.
$16.58/month including all taxes ($199/yr prepaid) for all that and a 30 risk-free guarantee!? And you get to keep the phone even if you cancel?! Sold. After reading up on the reviews here, I just signed up today. It didn’t seem like there was anything to lose with the money-back guarantee and free equipment and shipping. There is also a $24.95/month option, but since you get the unused months refunded, why bother? I’ll post again when I get it.

This is an off-topic question, but I was just curious about the ads you’re running on this site. A lot of other people run “Ads by Google” boxes too. Do you make any money doing this?

Yep, I make some money off of the ads. Although I’m not allowed to say how much per their terms, it is definitely not terribly significant. I would make more by just stopping my soda/coffee habit. Caffeine is most definitely a drug, kids!

Right. Today I’ve spend 2x$1.25 + $6.75 = $9.25, and with dinner, it’ll total up to $15/day. I rarely cook, so this is $450/month, which is unreasonable, since my mortgage is only $1000/month.
And I have a fridge in the office too.

Sunrocket’s great, I’ve used it for about 1 month now, better than I expected, even with the gizmo behind my router.

We’ve been using Vonage for about 7 months now and love it. We have 1 phone line and 1 fax line with unlimited calling nation wide and Canada with cheap rates to Europe all for 49.95 per month (business plan). Also included is a list of extras as long as your arm. Compared to Baby Bell prices, we have saved a bundle. Pam

We have been using Vonage for about 2 months now, and I am a changed man. It is saving us $400+/year.
