The following promotion is for holders of American Express “charge” cards that have Membership Rewards Points, including the Green, Gold, and Platinum cards. (Basically, it should look like one of the cards above.) This would work perfectly for those that signed up for the American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card that currently gives 25,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $2,000 within 3 months and are still in the fee-free first year.

Usually these cards require you to pay the bill in full after each month, but if you enroll in their “pay over time” feature they’ll give you 5,000 Membership Rewards points. (Platinum card holders can get an extra 10,000 points.) Now you can pay exorbitant rates like everyone else. 🙂 But wait! The good news for you responsible consumers is that there is no fee for enrollment, and also no requirement to actually pay any interest. So why not enroll and grab an extra 5,000 points? Fine print from the 5k offer quoted below.

1. To be eligible to get bonus points, you must be enrolled in the Membership Rewards® program at the time of enrollment in these features. Only one bonus offer per Membership Rewards account is permitted, and bonus points will be credited to your account within 6-8 weeks after enrollment. Maximum 5,000 points per account. Bonus ID: 7908 and 7906. Terms and Conditions for the Membership Rewards program apply. Visit membershiprewards.com/terms or call 1-800-AXP-EARN (297-3276) for more information. Participating partners and available rewards are subject to change without notice. To get bonus points related to this offer you must enroll by June 30, 2012.

  1. I signed up for this last year. While the signing up part was easy enough, the change in my bill was entirely hard to understand — as in, the bill was hard to read/make sense of. I just wanted to continue paying my bill in full every month. However, adding this “feature” to my account caused the bill to become bloated and overly convoluted with the addition of various things that I could or couldn’t pay over time. I just wanted the bottom line and could barely figure it out. I turned off the feature after two months.

  2. I signed up for a Gold card earlier this year when I got a mailer offering 50k points after spending $3k within three months. Not sure if that offer was special and/or is still going, but I rarely play the rewards bonus game though this one was too much to resist. I will cancel the card before the end of the year.

  3. seems like this is a targeted promotion, i just got a platinum (mercedes benz) card, online enrollment did not work for me and they were not able to enroll me over the phone either

  4. Damn the Biz platinum isnt eligible for this promotion 🙁

  5. just tried, said its not eligible. Awesome site, keep up the good work, longtime reader and always tell my friends about it.

  6. Worked for my AmEx Green. Said – Effective 5/10/2012.
    Thanks.

  7. Green Lantern says

What happens if you don’t pay your charge card balance in full like you’re supposed to? Also, what APR will you pay if you actually use the Extended Payment Option?

  8. Green Lantern says

Also, I tried to enroll for the promotion and it says I’m not eligible even though I have a charge card. Is this a targeted promotion?

  9. I signed up in April, 2012, and no points credited. Anyone gets the 5000 points yet?
