You'll instantly be alerted that there's a problem, and can respond to the situation appropriately.
Port Your Existing Phone Number

Exclusive Web Portal
My Ooma is the online command center for your Ooma system. You can check your voicemail and call logs, configure your preferences, upload your Contact List, update your 911 address and much more. Access My Ooma anytime and anywhere that you have an Internet connection, even from your mobile smartphone.
Crisp, Clear Voice Quality with No Dropped Calls
PureVoice HD technology allows Ooma to deliver clear audio even when substandard calling conditions exist. It includes:
Advanced Voice Compression: Ooma uses an advanced voice compression algorithm that consumes over 60% less bandwidth than standard VoIP technology. That leaves you with more bandwidth for your other online activities, and increases the likelihood that your voice traffic will be delivered.
Wire-speed Quality of Service: Even though Ooma uses only a fraction of the bandwidth of standard VoIP technology, those packets need to arrive without delay for optimal quality. The Ooma Telo prioritizes voice packets without slowing down the rest of your network. This way you can enjoy crystal clear calls even as you're uploading your latest video clips.
Adaptive Redundancy: Network packet loss is the enemy of VoIP - dropped packets can cause voice to sound stuttered or garbled. The Ooma Telo detects packet loss on your Internet connection and automatically sends redundant packets to boost the clarity of your phone call.
Encrypted Calls: Ooma takes your privacy seriously. We leverage the same encryption technology that governments use to protect classified data to protect your conversations. This makes Ooma even more secure than the traditional landline.
High Definition Technology: HD Voice technology doubles the fidelity of your phone calls by capturing twice the speech information of a standard voice call (yes, that even includes your landline). When you and the other caller both use an Ooma Telo Handset or other HD compatible phone, your voice will sound more natural than ever.
Sophisticated Technology Meets Elegant Design
The Ooma Telo is a small, always-on, network-managed, secure Linux computer packed with processing power to keep your calls clear and reliable.

This is a fine device and it works quite well. I recommend its purchase but everyone should be aware of the modest yet mandatory monthly fees. After you buy this device you MUST pay between $3.50 to $4.00 a month (that is the absolute minimum - actual cost varies by zip code) every month to OOMA. For that modest fee you'll get unlimited* free phone calls through out the USA, Caller-ID, 911 service, answering service, etc at this basic rate. OOMA's basic service is quite good and far from crippled.
What is the OOMA Telo?
A device that connects between your existing phones (wired or wireless or both) and the internet to make phone calls. Your computer does not even have to be on and no software is needed/used and/or supplied. To repeat myself, you only need an active high speed internet connection for this device to work. This is identical to what cable providers (such as Comcast, ATT Uverse, etc) offer in their TV/internet/phone packages. These cable providers also dump your phone calls onto the internet and then charge you $40 or $50 a month for just the telephone portion of your service. OOMA is also nearly identical to Vonage yet much cheaper too.
Is OOMA free?
NO (although it once was). Figure about $4.00 a month (it varies slightly by zip code) for unlimited* USA calls with caller ID, 911, answering service, etc with OOMA's "basic" service. Their "premiere" service, offers a number of very advanced features (see their website) and costs an additional $10.00 a month added to the previously mentioned $4.00 a month charge. So to be clear - the premiere service costs about $14.00 a month and OOMA's basic service costs about $4.00 a month. Keep in mind OOMA's basic service has a wide range of features so it is far from basic and/or useless. In fact, their "basic" service is exactly what I use. Thankfully - OOMA only offers two levels of service - basic and premiere so you can easily review the differences on their web site
What equipment/services does OOMA require?
Simple - a "high speed" internet connection but OOMA does NOT require your internet connection be very fast. In fact, by todays standards, it can be incredibly slow. Interestingly, OOMA does not clearly specify a recommended internet speed but, given various forum posts, it seems that even a lowly speed of 1 MPS is more than adequate. So if you have any type of internet connection other than an old fashioned dial up connection, this device should work just fine. Your existing phones will also work just fine too. No actual phone is included with the device but it is easy to hook up your existing home wiring and existing phones via a single telephone cord plugged between the OOMA telo device and any telephone jack. That type of setup is identical to what cable providers or Vonage uses.
Is OOMA a good deal?
I'd say it is a GREAT DEAL but here are the figures. You pay a fairly hefty up front cost to purchase the OOMA Telo device (between $150 and $200) and then it will cost you about $4.00 or $14.00 a month for OOMA's services. Compare that to your monthly costs for internet based phone service from your cable provider. Within the first year you'll likely come out ahead and after the first year --- the savings really add up. OOMA is also considerably cheaper than Vonage which charges about $25.00 a month PLUS taxes and fees of about $9.00 to $13.00 for their unlimited* USA/Canadian calling plan. So Vonage really costs about $35.00 a month. However, Vonage does not charge for their equipment. Yet you will still come out ahead with OOMA in the first year and keep saving considerably more thereafter.
Voice Quality:
It is generally excellent and since OOMA has put a lot of technology into this device I suspect it is not only as good as what you get from your cable provider but likely better. I did several test calls from my OOMA system, calling myself on another line (which was an actual, old fashioned, hard wired landline - the gold standard). Beyond a very slight delay, the voice quality was superb. BTW: I'm an electrical engineer. Yet nothing beats a hard wired, old fashioned, telephone connection.
The Disadvantages:
The only disadvantage I can see is it takes a (tiny) bit of effort to install the OOMA in comparison to just having a tech from your cable provider installing everything. OOMA has made this device very simple to install but some folks like everything to be done for them and here (obviously) the cable provider comes out ahead. Also to be fair - an elderly person or someone who is absolutely clueless might have some difficulty but OOMA has gone overboard in making it a very simple device to install. Yet, to be very clear, you have to know where your modem is and find a telephone jack near it and run the supplied cable. Then go to OOMAs web site and supply some simple information (like your name and address so 911 knows where to go) and a credit card number so they can bill you.
Another problem for OOMA, Vonage, Cable providers, etc is you need electrical power to keep your phones working. Traditional, old fashioned telephone lines provide their own power that is sent over their wires. I can't tell you the number of times my home has lost power (I'm in a bad service area and we loose power at least 4 times a year but rarely more than 20 days total in a given year) but my traditonal landline phones always keep working. I use OOMA for a second line only. If you have good cell phone service this may not matter or if your electrical power is far more reliable it probably is not a concern. For the infirmed and those that need a lifeline - you want a battery backup or an old fahioned telephone line.
Other Comments:
I really like my OOMA telo unit but I resent OOMA's current advertising. This is NOT a one time purchase nor is ANY free service included except for the first 2 months!!! At minimum - figure about $4.00 a month after you spend between $150 and $200 for the device. Without paying at least $4.00 a month you will find you have purchased a useless device (meaning a "brick" - techno parlance - for an electronic device that is as useless as a brick)! Now $4.00 a month is not much but why advertise OOMA as free????? That strikes me as deceptive. Shame on you OOMA when you have produced such a fine device and such a reasonably priced telephone service.
* Unlimited calling is NOT unlimited calling. OOMA says (in the fine print) that it includes up to 5,000 minutes per month and Vonage says (in even finer print - actually this was quite hard to find) their "unlimited" plan includes up to 3000 minutes per month. Clearly both services want to discourage call centers and businesses from using their products. OOMA, on its web site says "We have never terminated a customer that has used the service for residential purposes." Vonage says their "unlimited" (actually a 3000 minute plan) suits 95% of its customers. I believe both of them. These minutes apply ONLY to out-going calls for OOMA. I'm uncertain about Vonage. I also suspect that cable companies have similar caps but I have not researched this.
I would NOT RECOMMEND the OOMA HD2 handset. I tried it and then returned it. I recommend you just stick with your existing phones. This handset is not required and I preferred my existing cordless and wired phones. See my review of OOMA's HG2 handset, but be aware, there are some advantages to users that use OOMA's premiere services if they purchase this handset.
I had 2 lines over at Vonage and transferred them both to the Ooma. I also paid the extra money for advanced features. Altogether at Vonage I was paying about $600/year for service. With Ooma, I had to buy the Telo, the extra features, 2 line porting fees and a handset (so I could have different voicemail for each of my 2 lines) as well as the $4 or so per month in taxes. All together, this came to about $420.00, so even buying all the stuff up front I still saved money for the year. Next year, since I don't have to buy the equipment and pay porting fees, I'll be paying $168.00 for the year. By the way, they call this "free" phone service. It is not free. In my case I had to pay a bunch of money for equipment and porting fees. If you just want to set up the Ooma, get a new phone number and not use the advanced features, then it is basically free although you will have to pay a few dollars a month in taxes
I've been using the Ooma service for about a month, and the quality of calls has been the same as I had with Vonage (which was very good).
The setup is extremely easy. I set mine up as well as a friend's with no problem. The hardest part about the setup is knowing where your router is and how to plug an ethernet cable into it. If you know that (or can have someone show you) the rest is pretty easy.
The Telo allows you to screen voicemails, which Vonage didn't allow for.
The advanced features were well worth the money, for me anyway. They have pretty much the same features Vonage had but more. The 2 differences I don't like are 1) Ooma charges for voice to text transcription, even though the quality is just as bad as it was at Vonage and Vonage gives it for free and 2)The simulring feature only allows you to ring 1 other phone number when someone calls you while Vonage allows you to ring 5 others. Neither of these is that big of a deal, just annoying. Other than that, the advanced features are great. They include some nice things VOnage doesn't have. For instance, you can add numbers to a blacklist and choose what kind of message callers on the blacklist hear. So I have it set up to tell the telemarketers who call me that my phone number is disconnected. It even lets you use a general blacklist of known telemarketers so they get filtered out before their calls even get to you. Also, there is a feature that will send you an email anytime someone calls 911 from your phone. This is very nice for people who have a family at home. If there's a problem you know right away.
In other reviews I've seen a lot of complaints about the tech support. Since I had multiple lines and needed a couple pieces of equipment I've had to talk to Ooma's tech support on the phone and via chat several times. The quality of the support was about the same as it was at Vonage. The tech people are definitely ESL and work mainly from scripts, but no more so than any other tech support I deal with. While there are definitely problems with the way tech support is sent overseas by most companies, Ooma isn't worse than any other.
I've also seen a lot of complaints about how long it took to port phone numbers. In my case, I requested porting of both my numbers from Vonage on a Monday and the porting was finished by Thursday (3 days). So in my case it was extremely fast.
Another minor plus is the look of the Telo. With Vonage I always shoved the box behind a cabinet because it was ugly. The Telo is actually nice looking enough that I have it sitting out where I can see it.
The only complaint I have is that to port a second line and have separate voicemail for it, you have to buy an Ooma handset (you can get a $40 discount on it when you buy the advanced features). While the Telo and the Ooma service in general are fantastic, the handset is the opposite. It feels cheap and the call quality is terrible (when I told tech support about how bad the call quality was on the handset they said "sorry to hear that" and then quickly changed the subject). Luckily for my second line I only need it to go to voicemail, so I never actually have to use the handset anyway. If I actually had to make calls on that second line I would be upset.
Overall I am extremely happy with the Ooma Telo and service and have recommended it to a lot of people
