American Express has another promotion offering 5% off all gas purchases at BP until 1/31/2012 when you register your card. It says you must be invited, but these offers are often found via a simple banner link somewhere on their website and usually work as long as they accept your card number. You get the 5% back via statement credit, on top of your existing card rewards. I registered my trusty Starwood AmEx travel rewards card with no issues.

Try yours… it’s worth a shot for an additional 15+ cents off per gallon. If you combined this with the Blue Cash Preferred AmEx with 3% back on gas, you’d be looking at 8% total cashback.

Update: The wording is ambiguous, could mean 5% back on all your purchases for the entire month!

  1. Thanks but bp sold all of their southern California locations to help pay for the gulf disaster.

  2. It looks like the 5% cashback is not just for gas purchases. It looks like if you purchase gas at bp once between now and end of january, you will get 5% cashback on the entire statement balance for that month.

  3. At least that’s the way its phrased on their offer: “using your registered Card, you must make a single purchase at any participating location between 12/8/11 and 1/31/12”, and “follow these steps to get 5 cents back with every dollar you spend on ALL PURCHASES ON YOUR STATEMENT”. It never says that it’s only for bp purchases. And if it is, then it makes it seem like its only for one bp purchase. Regardless, the offer is very poorly written!

  4. Thanks!

  5. Hey Jon,

Maybe you can correct me if I’m wrong. All the BP-related stations in my area (norcal) are AM/PM which don’t accept credit cards in the first place. And they typically charge for debit cards. Are there other stations I’m not aware about?

  6. Same question as Eric. I don’t think I’ve seen a BP in the bay area since the 90s.

  7. I don’t usually use BP myself, but I figured lots of other people might.

Rereading the article after some sleep, it does seem rather curiously worded!

  8. Chase has the AARP card which gives 5% off on all purchases for 6 months, which is an even better deal (for 6 months).

  9. According to the locator on their site, Arco and AM/PM counts.

  10. They may “count”, but they don’t accept credit cards (I called two to confirm), so I think this offer is completely unusable, at least here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

  11. I thought the Blue Cash is 3% on gas? Also, if it’s 5% on everything maybe it will replace the 3% on gas (or even the 6% on groceries) with the 5%. Someone should call and find out the details.

  12. Haven’t used BP since they polluted the gulf. Don’t plan on starting now. I’d love 5% back, but can’t support them any longer.

  13. …”the Cash Preferred AmEx with 6% back on gas”…

are you sure? it seems 6% on supermarket and 3% on gas station?

  14. @Andy – Sorry, got carried away, you are correct.

  15. Good news! It is time for me to register my American Express Preferred card to earn extra 5% cashback, hope it is not only on BP gas, but on all the purchases.

  16. Thanks Jonathan!

By the way, if you click on the “Find a BP” button after you sign up, it takes you (of course) to the locate a BP search page on BP’s website. This is absolutely the least effective store/station locator I have ever seen for any company or organization!

BP’s website only found two stations within 20 miles of my zip code, at 4 and 12 miles away! The Gas Buddy app on my phone found two within just 2 miles, and I know of several more closer than 12! So, if you need to find a BP near you, use Gas Buddy’s app or http://gasbuddy.com/ instead.

  17. @ cathy: I would be sure to check with Amex before assuming 5% back on all purchases rather than strictly BP. Even if the wording is ambiguous, we shouldn’t assume the offer is better than it really is meant to be.

  18. Wow, despite how it was worded to appear to mean 5% on all purchases, there is evidence when I log in to my Amex account that they only intended 5% cashback at BP.

After reading this blog post, on 12/23 I purchased $17.44 to top off my tank at a BP. The following two days, I made about $40 of purchases. On 12/24, my account is credited by “American Express Com” for $0.87, which is just about exactly 5% of the BP purchase alone.

If they really meant 5% of BP purchases, the writer who composed the offer description seriously messed up! In my opinion, it’s hard to argue you meant for the rebate to apply to just BP purchases when you said “get 5 cents back with every $1 you spend on all purchases on your statement.”

  19. @Dan – Thanks for sharing your data point. It does appear that’s what they meant.

  20. I’m unclear as to whether it’s valid for any BP gas purchase before 1/31/12 or for just one purchase. The offer states “Using your registered Card, you must make a **single** purchase at any participating location between 12/8/11 and 1/31/12”. (emphasis mine)
In addition, after my first purchase, I received an email stating “Congratulations, you completed **all qualifying transactions** on your Card ending in 21006. ” (emphasis mine)
Has anyone received the credit for more than one purchase?

  21. It appears to me that you only get 5% back on one transaction at BP and nothing else. Has anyone else seen anything to the contrary? I signed up but am probably not going to end up going to BP. On my way to the store I passed by the only BP in my area and is was over 3% more expensive than the Hess I ended up going to instead.

  22. @Brian, I’ve had the same experience. Accordingly, it appears the deal may only be good towards 5% back on one BP purchase. Not nearly as good of a deal as it first appeared. As pointed out by other commenters, AMEX/BP really did a number on the copy for this promo. Apparently “All” purchases actually equates to “One” purchase–which is ridiculous.

  23. I can confirm that a second BP purchase was credited with the 5% cashback. So, apparently, despite the wording, the promotion is as Jonathan originally interpreted it: 5% cashback on BP purchases through January.

  24. I go my AmEx statement and received 5% back on the one and only BP gasoline purchase I made. I think the refund / discount almost makes up for how overpriced the station’s prices were. Oh well, it was worth a shot, just in case the offer actually had applied to the whole statement.
